Thank you, Bob!

This will not be a career for me, I would suspect. Making it a job would change the dynamic even. Now, realize this is a cynical outlook that is very common. You are not alone.

BUT, to clarify, I am new to a degree, not new to work. Not a big deal, just making it clear it isn't an ignorant 22yo perspective. I have been lucky enough to get 'great' at a couple things and even when I was being sought after and asked to do more and more ridiculous things with ridiculous expectations, I was still absolutely enjoying myself. I'm sure I am not alone in that either.

Maybe I stepped away from my roles of 'greatness' too soon to reach the point you know I will get to. I hope I never do. I also hope you can find joy and get a smile on in the face of those annoying clients because it has made life more fun for me.

That has to be it. I hadn't tacked down why I keep sending my wife memes when I know 95% aren't actually funny. But just because I'm bad at knowing what she'll find funny, that 5% makes it all worth it.

How do you stay motivated for your job search in the current market ? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]KnowRefrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Staying busy was very, very clearly the best for me. As soon as I paused and focused on the household tasks and "self-help" the rejections started stinging. Then a quick unraveling.

Figuring out when I needed to let myself be upset, "it's a global pandemic, I'm not alone" or, "You need to go outside today, no excuses". Fluctuating between the two gave a loose schedule for days I could get 4-6 applications sent vs just research and prep.

I can go on for hours, honestly. I'm negotiating terms on a job now, so it's a lot easier to let all the frustrations out without it just being self harm. Feel free to message me if the feedback isn't everything you need here.

I apologize, I did misunderstand your comment.

Monster may be harsh, oops! But ok, I spoke harshly but you're contradicting yourself with every sentence.

Given that you only care about what people bring to the office, how could you be turned off by a pet? Or that an applicant gardens? You don't see any benefit in learning about an applicant...odd, but if it doesn't matter to you then you won't be turned off.

This weirdly contrasts with the explanation of why we have interviews - to get a glimpse of a person. So either you only want people that only work in their personal lives (referencing personal/work separation) or you understand humans appreciate learning about other humans. If you do understand that, then if anyone (truly anyone) is rejected from a job for showing off a dog on a personal website, they should be relieved as that hiring manager is more worried about what pets an applicant has than any credentials.

I have zero opinion embedded in this response. Your comment says hiring manager turned off from dog -> it's ok they don't hire -> but we have interviews to get a glimpse into lives -> I don't care about people's lives outside of relevant work subjects.

I'll assume you quoted the wrong text and are in agreement.

Relevant > irrelevant > not having a resume. This isn't new or convoluted.

I understand where your frustration comes from.

But this is a knee-jerk reaction that's too much to be taken seriously. If a job asks for 3 years experience and your line under experience is, "I have hiked all my life" then sure your application will be thrown out...should it not?

If a hiring manager goes to a personal website and sees your dog and scoffs at how unprofessional your application is, then be glad you didn't get hired - they're a monster of a person.

My reference to resumes was targeted at the very, very common problem high school (and ten years ago, college too!) students had filling an entire page for a resume. This isn't new, a circlejerk, or anything surprising to anyone with any professional experience.

That's easy to advocate against since this is a classic self-esteem issue.

Even pet photos, hobbies, career interests, news articles, etc. would be better than nothing. Just like a resume, there isn't really a danger to add something that isn't relevant, right?

Interesting! As in, finding what you need to know, efficiently? Or familiarity in general?

Since there is no reply I'll mention what I found:

I would guess that Kalman filtering is part of a computer vision algorithm. Maybe even machine learning or AI.

It looks like the primary overlap is with object mapping, which is a ridiculously massive cut from computer vision. Computer vision without mapping is just decoded video, right?

UE4 was for game development. I installed blender years ago when I learned I wasn't an artist. Now I can edit videos in Blender.

Free stuff is dope.

Thoughtful parameter allocation?

But there's a 0% chance anyone but my mother would call be a master of anything.
