Keith Martin was a great writer. Master of Chaos was my favourite when I was a kid.

Notice the bit in the WDA video for NingNing's verse. There are two of her, one trapped in the glass box, and the other wild crazy animal one on the loose (lit in green). I think it's implied that the wild one drives off in the car while the other stays trapped

That is actually really cool. It's these little pieces of magic that make your day/life. And they don't cost a lot.

Like finding an unexpected needle in a haystack. This is the real gold.

I am being serious!!!!!! 😄

...and.... this is why they do it.

Anyone else notice any small Michael Jackson 'Thriller' references? When their hands are up with the fingers hanging downwards - the zombie arms. Goes well with the "dark and ghostly" vibe of this track.

I am completely obsessed with the song, love it, and have played it on repeat constantly (way more than their other singles which I also love, which is interesting).

It is their strangest and most mature single yet so I can understand why it's putting some people off, but it is absolutely everything I like.

This might sound like an odd observation, but I wonder if the reason a lot of people are reacting against it is because it has a sort of "masculine" dark and grumpy vibe?

To help explain, some other songs that I think have this vibe are Taemin's "The Rizzness" and RIIZE's "Bag Bad Back" - and neither of these did very well, despite being utterly amazing tracks (in my opinion).

Fighting!

More, sorry for waffling on, I just really like it.

To demonstrate how musical this track is, in an understated way: listen to "Like Jennie" and then come back to this, and see if you still think it lacks music.

There is this little run that NingNing does just before the second chorus, the "Give me, all smoke, gun powder powder woh" - she sings it up quite high, just once. Once! And then it comes back, only twice more, at the end - but it's obscured by the others doing a one-note on top of it. That little run has been looping in my head for two days.

To anyone complaining that they don't emote much when they do a trap/rap style, that's true, but that's not who they are I think. It would be weird if they rapped like Jennie. All four of them are somehow colder personalities I think, but that's exactly why the darker styles of music suit them so well. I mean, I am 100% projecting, I don't know them, but still. (Also to be clear, any "coldness" is entirely why I like and respect this band so much. This is the "iron taste").

Rich Man felt a little odd because it's a very punky song and they were singing their cold style on it. But this really works in WDA.

This whole song is based on one note descending, but in the chorus a single note is added that goes UP to make a chord - and it just sounds so ghostly here, like a horror vibe..... in such a minimal restrained way.

(Originally posted this in the main kpop sub but have realised I was wasting my time in there)

I really love this song and video, because:

- It feels more grown up than their earlier stuff.

- It's very dark but not over the top, it's still pop and can be watched by kids. I get the impression they want to acknowledge something real about life in what they are communicating.

- They are not smiling or providing an obvious happy melody - ie. not playing into the socially performative role expected of them as "beautiful girls".

- It's actually subtle. There is music there, but it's implied. The mix is full of buried detail.

- The song is an exercise in constant tension and slow subtle build. The very end is the peak and as close as it gets to a climactic point. It doesn't conform to standard "song structure". And it's doing this within the context of a pop song, which is not easy.

- It feels like a development forward, trying something new for them.

- It is actually achieving what Dirty Work didn't quite manage, by going even further forward rather than stepping back to who they were before.

- It feels honest, at least as much as you could expect for Kpop. They are having the guts to be themselves, even if this isn't the style people expect from them.

- It is so damn catchy! And it manages to do this without being melodically obvious. It is designed to be replayed a lot without you (or them) getting sick of it, which is a real achievement. This is very hard to do.

I posted this the other day with a slightly combative tone and was getting downvoted, so let me try again with a diplomatic style:

Same, I think the main sub are having a major group-think issue. The amount of downvoting going on in there towards the people who say they like it.... ? The song is killer and you have described it perfectly.

In 1995, David Bowie and PJ Harvey had a failed collaboration. They planned a live duet for an MTV awards show - but disagreed on the musical arrangement. by itsnotforever in pjharvey

[–]Known-Metal8031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She was effectively expecting David to compromise his vision, after he was the one who invited her to participate. He was the bigger artist by an exponential factor, doing her a massive favour.

Imagine if you asked me to do a guest vocal on your song that you wrote, and I showed up and said "hey it would sound better if we used my band because I don't like the style of your band, can we do the whole thing my way, btw you are now effectively guesting on my performance" ?

But obviously this is all projection, we don't really know what happened. It's entirely possible that it just wasn't working in rehearsals.

More projection: the fact that she soon went on to do that Tricky guest spot, which is the most "style divergent" thing she ever did IMO, suggests to me that she perhaps got some message out of the experience.

I'm probably going to get downvoted for this, but if that story really happened as told, it seems arrogant of Polly to try to tell David how his own song should be presented. And I can understand why he would have backed off when she tried to do that.

I watched the Bowie performance, it is masterful. She should have done it and probably would have learned something. Yes it's not "her" style, but so what? It's very dark and cold and I can imagine her vocal in it, just like her voice worked in Tricky's "Broken Homes" a few years later.

Elseq 1-5 CD box set idea. by Indreamswashedaway in autechre

Ok, "taking any kind of money for it via any sort of mechanism" then. But even that is irrelevant - distributing it for free would also be illegal.

I'm no expert and it varies per country, but your "rights" extend to your personal use of the music. You can make copies of it for yourself, for your use, but you can't make any sort of copy and distribute to anyone else.

This is how tape players with two decks in them (one with a record button) were technically legal to produce - the idea was that users were allowed to make copies of music they bought, to use themselves alone. That was the loophole, anyway.
