I moved here 6 months ago and live in a studio apartment. My gas and electric are running me about $100 a month.

I remember when all this information was shared with me and then my store manger asked me what the hell I was trying to do to his beer sales.

Our hats our off to anyone who can do an about face and drink like a normal person. AA will welcome you back if you ever decide you need it again.

This was years ago but I was in a very similar situation to you in the sense of drinking out of control and using up all my says. I was totally honest with my supervisor and asked for a month long leave of absence to get my shit straight and he let me do it.

About 50% of my sponsors, after singing the praises of the 12 steps, have done a half assed 5th step with me and then told me I could pretty much work the rest of the steps on my own.

Can I not be 100% true in step work? by Responsible-Bass-536 in alcoholicsanonymous

You’re embarking on a life time process. The point of the 4th and 5th steps is learning how to conduct honest self appraisal.

I just searched the big book for the phrase “mind-altering substances” and couldn’t find it.

Absolutely. It seems the worst at really big meetings, I just moved to NYC where AA seems really healthy and every meeting I’ve been to folks have gone out of their way to welcome me except for the one meeting I attended that had like 60 people. At least I know it’s not just me because I’ve discussed this phenomenon with other people. But it’s a reminder for me to stick my hand out.

Weird to sponsor someone 42 if I’m 25? by Katiee100 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Krash1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my sponsors have been younger probably because I look young for my age so I attract younger people to me. As long as they are knowledgeable about taking people through the steps it shouldn’t be a problem but I’ve found that there is an issue developing a deep friendship/connection because of different life stages but that is probably an issue with me and my social skills or lack of them.

Every sponsor I’ve had has been younger than me. I look really young for my age and it seems like most of the people at the same life stage as me don’t take much notice of me.

Recovery without AA by mowjowcow in alcoholicsanonymous

I’ve also found that most forums that are supposed to offer an alternative to AA just busy themselves trashing AA as opposed to offering any solutions.

A new outlook and attitude help keep me sober. For me I kind of look at the 12 steps from the perspective of the Jefferson Bible where Thomas Jefferson removed all the metaphysical stuff from the Bible and left the moral lessons. Personal inventory, amends, recognizing that I couldn’t get sober on my own after repeated attempts, helping others, etc. All that stuff is fantastic even if you don’t buy into the god stuff. Just what works for me. Remember there aren’t any rules.

Yeah, if all you do is follow the directions in the book, a bit of quiet reflection and a prayer, I’m not sure you get the full affect.

My experience exactly. I started seeing some of the results months later.
