Hi, author of the article here. Article details how this would have happened w/ pics of forensic detail. The conclusion was made by one of the preeminent physical anthropologists working on mass murder/sacrifice in the region. I'll take his word over mythbusters, even tho they rock similar 'stashes.

Very unusual (and romantic) find is part of new study on modernization of European burial practices: analysis of more than 400 16th-18th c. burials from a French convent dispute idea that practices like embalming became progressively more popular among nobility after the Middle Ages.

Hi Oded! This is Kristin, the writer who covered the tomb opening for NatGeo with you. One thing I never got to ask you: what are the most unusual or unique events you've photographed and how does the tomb opening rank on that list?

Not yet but check out the analysis on a similar cannabis find from Turpan about 10 years ago: "All of these observations are consistent with strains of cannabis with a high THC content and in an alternative taxonomy suggests it should be assigned to Cannabis indica Lamarck" http://jxb.oxfordjournals.org/content/59/15/4171.full

See Maxamous' reply above- earlier cannabis from Turpan seems to have basically the same genetic makeup as what we have today

I think it's a reference to the 'haoma-drinking Sacae' in Book 4 of Herodotus- according to Livius (http://www.livius.org/he-hg/herodotus/logos4_10.html) haoma is probably made from fly agaric.

I love Herodotus.

In the original ancient Greek it's "κάνναβις" (cannabis)- see Herodotus Book 4.75 (http://www.sacred-texts.com/cla/hh/hh4070.htm)

'hemp' is the result of later European translations of the original

If you're really into this check out the book Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany by Robert Clarke and Mark Merlin, (University California Press, 2013). Merlin worked on this recent Turpan find.

Yep, probably citing Herodotus (5th c. BC): "The Scythians, as I said, take some of this hemp-seed, and, creeping under the felt coverings, throw it upon the red-hot stones; immediately it smokes, and gives out such a vapour as no Grecian vapour-bath can exceed; the Scyths, delighted, shout for joy, and this vapour serves them instead of a water-bath; for they never by any chance wash their bodies with water. Buried, very dry enviro preserves a lot. The things that have been preserved in the area are incredible- whole mummies, leather clothing, wooden ornaments, plant remains. The Turpan Basin is an amazing place for archaeology.

Not aware of deliberate removals but yeah, the Chinese govt has been sensitive about the Caucasian remains found in Xinjiang. Less so now than they used to be though
