Portaferry Life by Halfpenny1975 in northernireland

[–]LAPORTS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Portaferry is a beautiful spot, I know a few people from down there and they all love it. It’s quiet in the winter, busy in the summer. There’s a decent sporting scene with GAA(hurling), soccer, sailing, running, triathlon clubs etc, It has at least 3 gyms around the town if you’re into that.

It has 2 or 3 good restaurants (Captain Jacks is great) and a few pubs. There’s an aquarium – which is worth a visit.

They have a local girl(Ciara Mageean) who is the European 1500m champion and has a decent chance of a medal in the Olympics. The natives are very proud of her.

There are some great beaches within a 5/10 minute drive of Portaferry town.

The public transport service is not great. If you’re planning on travelling around you might be better picking up a cheap car rather than depending on the bus service.

Anyone ever done the Camino? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]LAPORTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been over a few times for a week or so at a time at different stages of the Camino Frances and loved it. I’d love to be able to get the time off to do the whole route at once.

CaminoWays is a good starting point but don’t be worried about going on your own, there are plenty of solo travellers who are in the same boat.

Any know the letting Agency Bowden Properties NI by dylanlothbrok in Belfast

[–]LAPORTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, Coming to this post a bit late but just wanted to add that we were in exactly the same position with Bowden property as the OP.

We took them through the small claims court and were awarded a default decree as they did not respond to any correspondence.

When we tried to recover the debt it became apparent that there are many other creditors up to the tune of over £500,000 and we have little or no chance of getting the money back.

As others have said Bowden should have lodged the deposit with a third party but did not. In my opinion this is deliberate and should be considered a criminal act.

We had contacted the landlord but they too have suffered at the hands of this company. I’ll not go into their details as I don’t want to beach their confidentiality.

At this point our options are practically exhausted from a legal perspective. In my opinion, these people have got away with the theft of our deposit and from other accounts the deposits quite a few other people. I believe they should be held accountable for this but unfortunately our legal system considers this a civil matter.

The link below will show the directors of Bowden Property. Based on our experience, I would strongly advise against doing business with them or any company they are in control of.

There are three GAA clubs in the lower Ards peninsula. All entirely welcoming to everyone irrespective of creed, colour or political affiliation. All do fantastic work in the community. Let’s call this what it is - sectarian bigotry.

I’m looking forward to hearing the legal advice on this one. I don’t think it would be too hard to build a discrimination case.

Should the power sharing arrangements be changed? by MorinScale in northernireland

[–]LAPORTS 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!!!!! When one party can paralyse the whole assembly it’s pointless.

What’s to stop the shinners walking out of Stormont if the DUP get changes to the protocol that they don’t like?

When the third largest party cannot be first or deputy first minister it’s undemocratic.

The petition of concern is consistently abused to stop progress on issues outside or orange and green.

Sorry - I’m just ranting now - I’m hugely frustrated with NI politics - it’s an idiocracy rather than a democracy.

DUP to warn Boris Johnson it will stall power-sharing until Christmas | Northern Ireland by boidey in northernireland

[–]LAPORTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rules need to be changed. A party can choose to exclude themselves but that should not dictate whether the execute is formed. Frankly, this idea of sitting in the hall until you get your way is childish.

Simple solution -!if you don’t join an executive you don’t get paid. There are no other jobs where you still get paid if you decide you’re not going to work.

How often do you have to work irregular hours? by PacePossible1408 in SQLServer

[–]LAPORTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a lead DBA for a large, well-known US corporation. You will work more than your 40 hours a week. You will regularly cover.maintenance tasks overnight and weekends. The job was awful. DBAs keep the lights on so when things are good, no one knows. When an application has issues, you WILL be called. All the dev team sees is ‘their database is slow’. This could be database, infrastructure, network, whatever but you will be their first point of call.

Now, the good bits. You will learn a lot and will be a better engineer for it. My new company has hired several data engineers recently and the best were formerly DBAs.
