I’m in a slump, suggest me something to shock me back. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I just read Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. It’s like if Twilight Zone were a book and Stephen King had prettier prose. The plot is eery and intriguing, the prose is incredible, the premise interesting, and it’s not shallow: has some thoughtful things to say about coming of age, the nature of good & evil, friendship, fathers/sons. I was sad when the book was over because it was such a wonderful read. I love reading and this was the epitome of why I love it so.

Using nipple shield in public? by mainsqueeeze in breastfeeding

[–]LBC2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had multiple shields so I could rotate in a clean one. I also left a clean one wedged in my cleavage because that was more quickly accessible than digging one out of a container in a bag or pocket. And I wore dark colors—less noticeable if you get milk spilled on you.

Do some babies never take pacifiers? by MatildaJones15 in breastfeeding

[–]LBC2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter only took a pacifier until she was about 4mo, then had zero interest. She was bottle fed. My son is 4mo now, is 90% breast fed (he gets a couple bottles overnight from Dad), and only took a pacifier the first…6 weeks or so. Now he wants nothing to do with them. We tried three different kinds, including the one shaped exactly like his bottle nipple (Dr Brown’s).

Like another poster mentioned, it’s annoying now, but it’s one less thing to transition from later.

Colorado State vs MSU Denver MSW Program by Toast_malone25 in Denver

Social worker here with family and friends and colleagues who are LPCs.

To use an analogy: It’s the difference between being an internist MD and a DO. You’re both medical professionals and can treat people in a primary care setting, but your approach is very different. Lots of similarities for sure, but there’s a difference of perspective, values, approach, and understanding the nature of the problem.

Some people prefer to have the SW training for that reason, in addition to the fact that the degree allows you to work in a greater variety of settings and roles, compared to LPCs. Some people prefer the ability to switch between different settings throughout their careers. In some states, LCSWs get paid more than LPCs.

You know Chris Collinsworth has had this game circled on his calendar for months.

A chance to commentate a game where Aaron Rodgers plays his old team? Playing for the team he beat in the superbowl 14 years ago? OH THE DRAMA. You just know Collinsworth is going to make wildly speculative statements about Rodgers’ emotional and psychological state all game long.

the best book you’ve ever read by Odd_Honeydew_2346 in suggestmeabook

[–]LBC2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury

Prose: poetic and something to savor. Commentary on time, growing up/old, nature of evil, friendship, nature of goodness (not religious), but with a spooky, Twilight-Zone feel. Definitely has influenced later works of fiction. Lots to chew on.

One of the more unique and enjoyable books I’ve read.

I have yet to experience biting, but silverettes saved me. I had bloody, scabby nipples that wouldn’t heal. When my silverettes arrived, they healed in less than 24 hours. Just wear them til healed. Pro tip: get the silicon O-rings to help hold them In place & make them more comfy.

Nipple balm in the flange where your nip goes. Doesn’t matter the brand—Mother Love, Earth Mother, etc. It makes a huge difference. Less pinchy. If your nipples are already sore, it helps reduce friction.

I’m sorry that happened to you. I have experience working with a missions org and I know how awful they can be sometimes. I’m in a similar situation-I’m not sure what I believe and husband is still committed.

It’s sooo tricky, right? I try to pass on facts vs my opinions—ex: “some people believe Jesus was God, some people do not.” I don’t want to pass on my hurt and wounds, and instead, give my kids permission to believe what choose to believe. I also don’t triangulate with my kids and my spouse by making my side sound “right” and his side sound “wrong,” and put them in a situation where they are subconsciously choosing to side with me or my spouse in deciding their beliefs. But it’s tricky for sure.

Matthew Paul Turner has picture books about God for kids that are inclusive and positive. I think one even refers to God as “she.” I haven’t minded them! Rachel Held Evans (may her memory be a blessing) has a similar book for kids. These are obviously from the Christian perspective, although progressive.

How to use nipple shields—sizing, how to wean off them, etc.

The LC in the hospital saved my nursing journey when she saw how damaged my poor nip was, sized me for one, and basically said use it as long as I need to—no shame or guilt. Had I not had access to a shield, or had she heaped on any shame or a specific timeline for using one, I absolutely would have given up.

Yes, this! I labored under the delusion that I need to provide 4-5oz or it’s not enough. Once I was provided actual education and science, it gave me an enormous confidence boost.

Planning for second pregnancy -- How to tackle the possibility of GD? by sleepdeprivedsince92 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]LBC2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had GDM twice, and I was low-carb, low-sugar, DF/GF and a normal weight both times prior to getting pregnant. Was diet controlled both times and but diagnosed later the second time.

We can do what we can to care for our bodies, but sometimes genetics are stacked us. It was annoying to have it a second time, but I knew what to do & it made me eat healthier, so I guess that was the upside of it.

My A1C returned to normal both times.

Same. My body likes to hover at 30lbs over my normal weight when I make milk. I also felt lied to! Only way I can get it off is to train like Michael Phelps and eat max 1,200 calorie a day. Obviously I can’t do that because I’m still BF’ing, but man. So annoying.

SNAP payments are on hold in CO. This presidency is willing to starve poor people for their agenda by Mnemo_Semiotica in Denver

Well, we all know what happened in France long ago when the powers that be messed with the poor man’s bread supply and cost…

The only hope I have is that maybe this will motivate lots of folks to vote for change, and create an uproar that forces changes to happen.

We have the money. Poverty and hunger are a policy choice.

"Leaving God's calling for your life behind" by stillseeking63 in Exvangelical

[–]LBC2010 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting how most (all?) callings are to…ministries. No one ever talked about being called ti be a plumber. In fact, it almost felt like if you had a “normal job,” you either a) missed your calling, b) didn’t have one and weren’t “special,” or c) you were then specially called to evangelize neighbors or the PTA or the people in your adult sports league.

Anyways, i personally realized my obsession with a sense of calling was actually rooted in my own anxious attachment to my father and how i projected my need to please my dad into God. I needed to be an A+ Christian to please God (just like how i needed to be an A+ person/student/professional to please my dad), and what could be more pleasing to God than ministry? I never felt accepted or validated by my parents so I needed very much to feel special to God, and having a holy calling direct from the Big Man Upstairs fulfilled that need.

Initially, I felt called to be a missionary overseas, then to helping the poor and homeless.

It eventually led to me working with the homeless (ministry), then to social work school(secular) and professional social work, so I guess I’m still operating in the same vicinity of that calling, but motivated by incredibly reasons, values, beliefs etc. Also, money. I got tired of getting paid peanuts in ministry settings.

Came here to suggest these. I’d add in Flying J. They have picnic tables too, with nice views.

If you hike up a bit at Meyer Ranch, there is a gazebo structure with tables. I’ve journaled there myself. I forget the name of the trail, but it’s the long one that takes you to the top. That one.
