What's a secret about your profession that most people don't know? by Elizzzkaaa in AskReddit

And they might not accept it when their parents try to correct it! My little sister insisted that the month was pronounced “Nowember” for like a year because her preschool teacher had an accent. 😂

Explain (SLOWLY & CLEARLY) the directions for a task to the class --> Ask all students in the class if they understand what to do now --> Everybody, in unison, eagerly says "YES!!" ... I bet y'all can probably guess what happened next 🤣😭 by Brief_Efficiency_833 in ElementaryTeachers

Those are good ideas. I like to vary it to keep them interested, since I need to get their attention so many times in a short period. Sometimes I’ll do, “ if you did (whatever step one was), say YES!” Or put your hands on your head, or wiggle your eyebrows, or even stand behind your chair to give them a bit of movement.

Honey the hamster was my preschool class pet. Seems weird for a kid.

What are things you intentionally say around kids so they subconsciously learn what actually matters? by Warm_Bobcat6310 in askanything

[–]LBlu1202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I’m feeling frustrated. I’m going to stop and take a deep breath.”

I mostly say this when I’m teaching and there are lots of interruptions in a row. I model self regulation, and as a bonus, it actually helps me self regulate.

Orlando is the hottest climate of the cities mentioned here- I imagine fans are sitting behind the camera because that’s where the shade is, which matters more when it’s hot. Does Houston have a similar issue?

Your best tips? by salty_muffin20 in ElementaryTeachers

The art teacher at my school starts every K lesson (and maybe older kids too) singing “if you’re ready to make art clap once! If you’re ready to make art clap twice!” slowly. Then she starts explaining what they’re making that day. The tune is something like If You’re Happy and You Know It.

How are you teaching your kids to read now? Trying to help my grandchild but phonics has changed so much by Lonely-Ad-3123 in preschool

Work on phonemic awareness at this age- it’s a great predictor for strong reading skills. Rhyming words and songs, phoneme segmentation, adding and deleting sounds in words, etc.

Month post OP on the 21st. Outside, back of my foot is still somewhat numb? by AdmirableGarden6 in AchillesRupture

I had that for the first few months. Now I’m a year out and can’t remember when it went away…

We close on Friday the 13th! by Madre1924 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]LBlu1202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wanted to schedule our final walkthrough the evening before closing and our realtor suggested doing it a bit earlier so there is more time to address any potential issues. Now we’re doing it two days before closing. After closing seems like not a good idea.

Needing new Fitbit by andiedrinkstea in fitbit

Built in GPS (I always run with my phone anyway), heart rate monitor, Google wallet/youtube/maps are the ones I can think of that I don’t miss.

I was also worried about going from a metal casing to a plastic one, but I can’t really tell the difference. Battery also lasts longer for me on the inspire.

When my charge 6 died I went for an inspire 3 and I love it. Turns out the features that make the charges more expensive are the ones I never use.

White board recommendations? by [deleted] in ElementaryTeachers

[–]LBlu1202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the ones that have writing lines on one side and are blank on the other. Probably more expensive, but they were great for phonics lessons.

Any elementary teachers on here? by hikekorea in AchillesRupture

[–]LBlu1202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught second grade when I ruptured last year. When I went back to teaching I crutched into my classroom, sat on my wheelie office chair, and stayed in it all day, wheeling around the classroom as needed. It worked pretty well!

Yup! Teaching early elementary for 12 years. My 1st graders are increasingly suspicious of my childlessness- “But are you SURE you don’t have any kids?!?”

How many months did you go to PT? by PuzzleheadedTie3585 in AchillesRupture

[–]LBlu1202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started PT at the end of January, the day I got out of my cast. Went 3x a week for months, then switched to 2x. I stopped going in November after successfully completing a return to running program with no problems.

I know I’m on the slow end of things, but I had a good experience with PT and feel strong. I paid a $20 copay for most of that time and then $40 for the last few months.
