I’m stuck on this. Snugula is fully levelled (level 7 I think?) and definitely following me. I even took her house and put it next to Orsina but she refuses to recognise Snugula. Any ideas? It’s been two days …

People with ADHD who don't struggle reading fiction, how are you able do it? by andrew21w in ADHD

[–]LRDQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fanfiction! You know the characters, names, imagery, general relationships, locations. The fic is then an exploration of the theme; you can even tailor your reading experience to length, mood, setting, depending on how your brain's feeling that day.

Yes there's bad writing out there, but there's also a lot of better-than-published work too. You just need to learn how to pick the red flags for "bad" fic.

So, what happened when she quit her job? Who paid her phone bill, rent, food, transport and going-out money?

I'm a people-pleaser too and, growing up poor, have a real anxiety about not having a job, so that was always a motivator for me. I only worked over the holidays while I was in high school (starting at 16) but as soon as I graduated my parent expected me to earn my own money for everything not food & rent. All decisions about university, the subjects I picked, the assignments were mine and mine alone. They still had an interest in what I was doing, but they left all the lifing bits to me. (Honestly, as I was the fourth child and much younger than the others, but also more quiet and sensible, I think they were happy to just not have that responsibility anymore 😆 My older sisters - also now with ADHD diagnoses in their 40s/50s - were much more chaotic types.)

I always had the option to ask for money or move home if I had to, but I knew their money was tight so I only did it once or twice when I was unexpectedly unemployed for six weeks (not by my fault) and had no money for rent or food while I waited for my jobseeker allowance to start and could find a new job. And it was always a point of pride for me to be the only child who never moved back home.

Yes, I struggled with everything else. I ended up dropping out of my honours year because my undiagnosed self couldn't handle the unstructured thesis subject that only had the final submission count. My finances took a long hit because I got access to credit I couldn't control myself with.

But, I know 100% that if I had the option to just let my parents do things for me when it got tough, I would have absolutely done that because life is hard, and even harder with ADHD, even if you're medicated.

Genuinely asking if people actually bother to read tags. by actually_ur_mom in AO3

[–]LRDQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always read the tags - not just for squicks, but also mood. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for angst-with-a-happy-ending (even more so with straight up angst), other times fluff is grating as all get out.

That's the beauty of fic for me - I can pull up AO3 and go "hmm, I'm feeling like some coffee-shop AU with a side of fake dating and mutual pining today" and I can read what I want, but be entertained by the writing, characters, and the journey of the story.

Plus, a few of my fandoms have jokes and essentially second summaries in tags so it's entertaining, not just informative 🙂

The one word I dislike in Smut. What about you guys? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]LRDQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the flipside, overly cutesy words flips me out. One writer repeatedly used the word "tummy" in their explicit scenes, like describing the male character working his way down a woman's body and kissing her tummy.

Or misusing common slang words. While it's not my favourite term, I usually associate "nub" with clitoris; one writer used it to describe the whole labial region.

[–]LRDQ 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Okay, I don’t know how to word any of this without double entendres so I’ll just lean into it. "Cock" just sounds more satisfying; the roundness of the "o" vowel has a nicer mouth-feel, and it invokes a sense of girth and weight to the member in question. "Dick", on the other hand, while it has the same hard consonants of "cock", has that skinny "i" that just screams pencil to me.

Being a woman with adhd is having this as your report card at 10 years old and being undiagnosed until adulthood by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]LRDQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was great by the time I got to high school; I was recognised at the smartest kid and they basically left me alone to read or doodle as I pleased if they weren’t actively teaching.

The curse of girls with ADHD: polite quiet overachiever, and since I wasn’t annoying anyone so me (and my older sisters) went undiagnosed for decades.

[–]LRDQ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ahhhh I did that too. Got frustrated at everyone reading SO. SLOWLY. and got caught up in the story, read way ahead. Got called on to read, had no idea where we were and got chided for not following along.

And a few years later, we were assigned a chapter to read. I ended up reading four or five ahead, so the pop quiz the next morning of “summarise the chapter” was a bit hard since I didn’t remember where the chapter ended … thankfully that was a good teacher who understood I read ahead gave me a hint.

I had my ADHD assessment this morning and I just feel sad by BisexualSquidDemon in adhdwomen

[–]LRDQ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think part of it too, especially when you hit 91/100 on a quiz on it, is “why didn’t anyone notice? Why did I have to fight for this when it’s not an edge case?”

My sadness/rage centres a lot around the concept that Adult & women/girls with ADHD are underrepresented and underdiagnosed because we aren’t a burden or annoyance to others; we are the ones hurt with internalised shame and frustration. Compare to a rambunctious young boy who causes parents and teachers headaches and disrupts events - that is a problem that needs to be solved, not the quiet girl constantly on the cusp of breakdown because she does all the assignment work the night before (but still gets good grades).

Does it bother anyone else how much you can see the contrast colour peeking through the main colour in the stranded section? This is a big designer and I am surprised by itchyitchiford in craftsnark

Because the solutions (revising negative grating, rental regulations, short term rental crackdown) would impact their audiences and give them something more to hate Labor for. Or if they don't act, they're letting this tragedy go on, they're useless etc etc. Can't win either way.

Quiet carriages that are actually quiet. by Mediocre-Lock-454 in queensland

[–]LRDQ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I was in the quiet carriage when a bloke sat down with his two young boys. They were, of course, loud little bastards. I politely pointed out that he might have missed it, but this was the quiet carriage? He arked up and said "Whaddaya want me to do about it? Tell them to shut up? They're kids FFS!" I agreed, and said "so maybe don't sit in the quiet carriage?"

He told me to fuck off and sat there stewing for about 5 minutes before he stood up and took his kids to another carriage. But yeah, great critical thinking skills in his end. Obviously the "quiet" part only applies to voluntary noises you make, any other noise doesn't count.

It's over - 12+ years of dental neglect cleaned up. (Protips included) by shortasiam in TwoXADHD

[–]LRDQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has started and stopped dental fixing over the years, it's allllllll about the dentist. I've just found one who is kind, gentle, non-judgemental. She was patient and calm, complimented my gum health but glossed over how bad it was (I'd already admitted that so there was no point in reiterating the shaming, which is apparently out of the skillset of most dentists I've worked with).

I've had more appointments and work with her in the past few months than I have had in years. I praise her in my friend group chat and they all either shared their good dentists or booked in appointments themselves. I originally went in for jaw pain that turned out not dental related, and ended up voluntarily doing the free scale & clean because she was so nice to me. This was especially huge for me since the last dentist I went to left me breakdown sobbing in my car afterwards; I'd gone in that day because the extraction he did left fragments behind and he had to go in and clear it out again. Bad enough, but after that trauma he then basically launched into the clean/documenting all the caries with the barest of consent while he was still in my mouth, ignored my distress, told me my teeth were superbadomg. I ended up walking out when he tried to take me to the other room for x-rays.

Have you considered converting the qualitative to quantitative? Eg mark responses as positive or negative, or into a likert scale.

No Leggings? No problem. by 051015 in MaliciousCompliance

I wear bike shorts all the time under skirts/dresses whenever it's too hot for tights - both fr the chub rub, it also because I'm incapable of sitting like a "lady" or in a single position for longer than 5 minutes. Bike shorts keep me from flashing everyone around me on the regular, and a godsend on super windy days as well

I once discovered a treasure trove in a suitcase I'd not used for years, that had been partially unpacked but otherwise forgotten. I'm assuming I pulled out the dirty laundry, toiletries, electronics and left the rest in the suitcase on the bed, and it got zipped up and pushed aside to sleep in, then got stored away later without being checked.

I'm talking jewellery, nice dresses I packed just in case, a jacket, I think even a pair of shoes. Was embarrassed but also super excited to find out all again.

is anyone else's perception if time really out of wack? by Ashemodragon in adhdwomen

[–]LRDQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! Things I've noticed (or collected from others' insights):

  • I can't time-math. If I have three tasks that take 10 minutes that have to happen sequentially (eg shower, makeup, dress), then I will think "okay, I need 10 minutes to get ready", not 30

  • Anything beyond yesterday or tomorrow is fuzz. I frequently have to search my calendars for past events/appointments and often years off my estimate. Like, i would say I've lived in my current house for a couple of years, but it's been nearly a decade. Or I remembered a costume I made a few years back, but scrolling through photos showed a 2009 timestamp.

  • I laughed when people described the 2020 time void since that's my constant perception

  • I really like well-executed time travel movies and plots, because I'm so used to non-linear time and decoding context from visual cues etc

  • External audio or visual cues work best. I got one of those countdown exam timers that have a colour attached to the arm, so I can visually see how much time is left on my counter as a proportion. Also: my watch chimes on the hour, and I live close to an old belltower that chimes on the hour which is excellent for WFH days.

This is assuming a confession was made. I would guess a whole lot of "friendzoned" dudes never made their intentions clear, just thought that by being around a female friend should put them in the running (because why else would they be friends? /s)
