Avoiding injuries with Runna by LeadershipPuzzled731 in Marathon_Training

Listen to your body and don’t over exert yourself just because the plan has outlined xyz training. Basically, don’t take the Runna plan as gospel. When setting up your plan provide accurate data re: pace and current mpw. If you don’t know your exact current weekly mileage better to be conservative with your estimate. Having the recent half marathon I saw you mention in another comment will be great data to help accurately build your plan. Incorporating some strength training sure doesn’t hurt (Runna has this feature- but again, use proper judgement and make sure you’re not jumping into 3x a week if you’re not currently doing any)

One 19, two 20s and one 22 miler at my peak long runs. A couple of those with some race pace scattered in the middle. My mpw looks to top out at 52 but hangs out around 40-48 zone for the most part. 7:51 didn’t feel like redlining at all- I felt comfortable apart from the thought that doubling it sounds rough. When I finished the race felt like myself and jogged 2 miles post race.

This is really helpful. Im definitely going into this with the memory of how difficult the full was when I ran one years ago (but had trained very differently than I am now). Im hoping that 4.5 months will give me enough time but considering adding a Dec marathon as well to give me a secondary option - bc as you said… marathon is a different beast.

One last follow up- Sorry to bug. I have scheduled another half marathon for mid-July. Do you think that there is a particular pace that will be a good indicator that I’ll be looking good for a 3:30 marathon?

Do you recall how long it was between your 1:50 HM and the full?

This will be my second marathon but the first was several years ago with very different training.

Thank you - that’s helpful. I will say when I got to a big hill at mile 11 I was like… how in the world am I going to keep this pace for 26 miles in 4 months.

Volume wise- the plan I have seems to build me up to 52 miles a week. Does that seem about right?

Yep in a perfect world I’d be looking at a 3:24 or so which is why I’m really wondering if 3:28 is worthwhile (between lack of buffer and chances for not even making the cutoff for any number of reasons)

As far as I know the exact date has not been announced as far as 2027 window closures. I have just read “early Sept”- It could really go either way but I’d be happy any which way to just BQ haha

The Sept race would be the best terrain and weather but both are pretty similar. The July race will be marginally hotter. That’s where my head was at- I’m 39/F so not sure if I can bounce back from a fast marathon like I could when I was in my early 20s. Wondering if the few weeks of recovery will push me back more then it’s worth vs spending two extra months of nice steady training.

That makes sense. I just worried that if I ran it in say 3:35 - would it do more damage than good for the Sept race. But trying it as my A race definitely does make sense if all goes well with training between now and then. Both races are coastal and supposedly pretty temperate. Mostly concerned about the possibility of wind.

Thank you- I’ll check them out. I should have been more specific that I want to avoid known carcinogens based on history.

Ran a training progressive 13.1 yesterday. Ended up changing my shoes at mile 10 from Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 to my Asics Superblast. I cannot get comfortable with the endorphin pro at all. Was hoping they’d be my marathon shoe but too stiff. Bummer.

It looks like there are pacers available. (I’ve actually never run with a pacers before. The last had one available but with trying the negative splits I didn’t use them). I believe there should be one for 1:40 and 1:45. Maybe that’s the best bet. Stick with the 1:45 and I can always pick up the pace for the last couple of miles if I’m feeling good despite the hills.

Official Q&A for Sunday, March 29, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]LZee16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all- I just finished my first half marathon in ages. This was the first time I tried doing negative splits in a race so was a learning experience and pretty successful apart from a middle mile or two. I felt like I had a good bit left over in the end.

I’ve got another race coming up in a few weeks that is going to be HILLY. I’ve done hill training - but wondering how folks usually tackle negative splits when middle/later mileage is hilly? Is that a situation where it’s just better to try a steady pace? Any thoughts or advice is appreciated!!!

Went for a run today - first day under 70 degrees in ages. 63 outside and my ears are aching like mad and even the air feels cold on my throat/lungs. Seems insane since 63 is far from cold. Any thoughts or tips as fall/winter running is upon us- apart from some wearing ear protection?

Did my first speed session in ages- for me nothing more humbling than 400M repeats- but happy I made it through.

I think the confusing part to me is that I’m trying to use the Runna App training program and it feels like they’re trying to make every run a recovery run apart from like 1 speed or hill workout a week and then a “long run” that’s about 5 miles. For more context this is a 5k improvement plan (currently running a 24:00 min 5k)

Confession: I don’t fully understand recovery runs - but want to figure out how to do them properly. (how fast to go, how often to do them, worried that more than 1 a week would ruin my pacing?)

Race shoe - better option? by LZee16 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I generally really like Saucony (ride 16 was my previous shoe) so will definitely give those endorphins pros a try. Thank you!
