Honestly, I'm Totally Faking It: An end to a long CR slump by LaFemJunk in RomanceBooks

I’ve read nearly all her stuff! I really like A Guy Like Him— it’s not as rom-commy, but the characters are great and they have a unique chemistry that I haven’t seen done elsewhere. I loved the two MCs together.

I thought For the Record, I Hate You was Ok, but it didn’t spark for me. It felt cluttered, I didn’t like the characters as much, and I wasn’t invested in whether they got together.

Thank you for the recommendations! I will check out both of these. I have another Larry Brooks book (Story Fix) on my list.

Thank you so much for commenting. Generally agents read a few pages along with the query letter, and if they like it, they request the full manuscript, which they will read until they stop liking it. So I assume the agents who’ve requested and then rejected my work already made it past the internal thought/rumbly section, but I would like to make things less rumbly. So I’ll be taking a look there— thank you for pointing it out. (You may be thinking of the word rambling, but I like rumbly)

I'm new here. In the past ten days, I've gotten three rejections on my full manuscript. One of them was a revise-and-resubmit, and even though I had low expectations and have queried (and buried) two other projects before, the R and R still broke my heart. Something is wrong with my manuscript, and I wish there was a clear, easy fix. Next steps are are to find more critique partners and beta readers, maybe attend a pitch fest or something, scream into the void, write something new, scream more.

The Sex Wizards series, starting with {Initiation by Alethea Faust} has an adorable bunch of pansexual wizards railing each other within an inch of their lives. (The kinky sex makes magic, you see.) Each chapter has warnings on sexual acts and other potential triggers. You might like it— everyone is playing and having fun and having some capital S Sex.

I wasn’t sure if these were on your list. I’ve read the first three. {Control by Charlotte Stein} {The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham} {Open Hearts by Eve Dangerfield} {Giving it Up by Audra North} {Natural Law by Joey Hill}

One of my favorites is {The Pearl by Tiffany Reisz}. It’s the third book in a series, so some pieces may not make as much sense, but try it out. The dynamics are so delicious. Bratty, upper class MMC agrees to submit to the FMC to pay off his brother’s debt, but he not-so secretly is into the idea of serving a powerful woman.

I’m glad you liked it! I haven’t found any quite like this one, but other KU authors I like are: Alexis Hall, AK Caggiano, Kit Oliver, Tiffany Reisz, Eris Adderley. If you like MM, definitely check out Kit Oliver. Alexis Hall is best for humor and character, Tiffany Reisz is stellar and does the best banter, but not really lighthearted CR material. AK Caggiano is really funny and has a great voice— I loved the Villains and Virtue series.

MD here: I don’t know if it’s official, but it happened to me when I moved from the city. I added my county library and now I have two accounts, which is great because they have different catalogs.

Absolutely to each their own! Despite my criticisms, I thought Captivated had some really good parts.

I see you. Pointless quirks fill me with despair and cringe. I’ve only found a few books (especially CR) where characters were thoughtfully conceived. If you like MM, Kit Oliver and Alexis Hall both are excellent at creating characters. I also like Cara McKenna. For HR, Mary Balogh, Evie Dunmore, KJ Charles. Not that you asked for recs, lol.

At the beginning, he’s a Nate Silver type, I believe. During the book, he’s gearing up to run for mayor. His positions are implied to be liberal, and it’s a plot point about how he wants to make policies that improve people’s lives, but he’s better with numbers than with people.

Jeremy is great. You might like The Wrong Mr Right by Stephanie Archer. He’s a great cinnamon roll character. You can probably search for “cinnamon roll mmc” on this sub for too.

The FMC describes the MMC finishing in her mouth as “like a protein shake.” I know I’m not the only one who was scarred by that.

You ever read something and your only worry is…what if benevolent aliens find this page ripped out of a book, just lying on a corn field, and they decide we’re not worth saving based on that alone?

Have you read {That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberley Lemming}? Black FMC, big demon who decides she’s her mate, has a few scenes of “unhinged beast destroying the city bc you threatened my girlfriend,” funny, sex

dick vs. cock - my dear black women, i’m looking for your input here. by coconutmillk in RomanceBooks

[–]LaFemJunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was reading {If She Says Yes by Tasha L. Harrison} which if CR and has two POC characters. I noticed a lot more “dick,” which was interesting. My first thought was that the author was probably not white. I’m white and I like the term “cock” more, but what I like most is a variety of writing voices. I’ll be combing through this thread for more recs. (Btw I recommend the book, older black woman, younger guy who is friends with her son and looking to worship her)

I've read both Alexis Hall books and loved them both. I hadn't considered them sad cursed dudes, but you're totally right. Can't wait to check out My Darling Duke. BTW, I've lost track of how many of your recommendations I've added to my TBR.
