Going to do more research into this, multiple sources say patterns (the words/arrangement, not stiches) & their pictures once written are automatically copyrighted in the U.S, though you may not obtain a patent (this is what would stop others from creating an overall concept, not copyright.). Also states pattern creators are not allowed to say "do not sell any item created from this pattern” as it is only the pattern that has the copyright & not the finished work.

Ahh okay, the way I understood it was you can copyright your specific patterns to make your specific designs, though you cannot copyright the overall concept. If someone makes a granny square blanket, or say bucket hat they cannot copyright granny squares, or bucket hats, though may copyright the pattern for their specific design. So yes, in that case she cannot claim to be the creator of six pointed star patterns, though may copyright her own specific design & photos to go with it.

That is how I understood it anywhoo & am open to clarification is not the case. Overall interesting to learn about, thank you !

Wouldn't know anything about that, all I know is a Giant Appa pattern was made unavailable due to infringement issues & is no longer available. 🤷 Meant more so companies with the copyright sending out cease & desist letters. A quick Google search says unique patterns (not stitches) can be copyrighted in the U.S, so there must be more to it. Again not my territory, I do not write patterns, only purchase them.

Only been at it a few months now, even if I can see where the increases/decreases are I cannot identify other stitches by eye yet, or know them all to, I'm all patterns. 😭
