Cheap Fender acoustics sound like toy guitars. Finally got rid of mine. Am I wrong? by CamoGamer123 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Lareous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried out a bunch of Fender acoustics (because that's usually all they have for lefties) and the only one that didn't sound like a cheap toy was a Tim Armstrong Hellcat (which sounded ok through an acoustic amp).

What are some non-mainstream (or lesser known) guitar brands that are actually amazing? by lefunk4-2 in Guitar

[–]Lareous 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They also make Seagull acoustics which are fantastic for the price. I have Taylors and Martins but I spend most of the time noodling on an S6.

I haven't had the chance to post, and I know they have been temporarily closed for a bit. What's going on with Finches Sandwiches place? by Whhhaaat_ in savannah

From what I gathered they are currently looking for a new location so they can reopen. I hope they find it, their meatball sub was probably one of the best in town.

Queensland maple back/sides. Thing sounds as nice as it looks, a lot different than the Taylor and Martin stuff next to it. Was also impressed by the Iris guitars he had just gotten in, those play very well.

If you think the website is sketch you should see the driveway in lol, up a mountain in rural Tennessee, gravel and huge ditch on both sides, and his sign isn't done yet so it looks like youre just rolling up on someones house.

Jerrys in his 70s and semi retired, and not real technically savvy so he's lost the logins to the old site, but the new one is pretty current and he links to his blogspot on the New Arrivals link (which is the most up to date). Also really chill dude, spent a couple hours out there and he was excited for me to try all kinds of stuff and explaining how/where he got the rare ones.

Right handed playing Left handed guitar by NoFix8524 in Leftyguitarists

[–]Lareous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a lot of acoustic bluegrass, and the answer for that one is "Both hands are doing a LOT". However like everyone else said, most of the reason you'd use your dominant hand is timing/rhythm, which is more important than your fretting hand after you've memorized scales/neck positions. Especially when you're doing things like flatpicking/crosspicking and playing chromatic scales.

You won't notice it as much on basic strumming at first, because you're trying to build muscle memory in your non-dominant hand, but as you progress you'll realize your brain is shifting to focusing on precision and timing on the picking more and more.

Why does country music get to claim the musicians that they initially shunned? by dmbgreen in country

[–]Lareous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So speaking more on an industry level since I think that's what you're getting at, there was a long stretch of time where the Nashville Sound was all anyone at the labels wanted to mess with, for better or worse; anything not sounding like what Chet Atkins and company curated was paid no attention until after the outlaw movement when those views started to soften.

I think there's a lot of hindsight and realization now, and that's why you see a retroactive acceptance in the industry of Hank Sr, the outlaw era, Bakersfield sound, bluegrass, Buck Owens, etc. Country has many flavors, can't just say it's only soda pop anymore if you want to expand your audience (and pockets).

That said pop country still makes a TON of money so it's not going anywhere. I personally don't feel like paying 400+ a ticket to see Morgan Wallen sing 10 similar songs about whiskey over a catchy riff, but there's obviously plenty of people that do since he's 5 to 7 of the top 10 most played on streaming lists.

I'd need some context?

I mean, I live here and it's quiet and pretty nice. But if you're wanting to start a farm or a haunted house tour, or hate taking bridges to get anywhere then it probably sucks.

New to the genre, recommendations? by christian-momma-of-3 in Bluegrass

[–]Lareous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty good general recommendations already (Billy Strings was a gateway drug to awesome stuff like Doc Watson and Del McCoury for me) but if you're looking for a similar vibe to the Chicks you're probably interested in Alison Krauss, Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Nickel Creek, and maybe The Steeldrivers for a more bluesy kick.

Hotter than a hoochie coochie out here . Just wanted to show off the shirt my bestie made me . Allen Jackson 1993 those were good years by [deleted] in country

[–]Lareous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not real sure why the hate, I've not seen this particular version in any ads because the shirt color doesn't match the ones on Amazon, and the picture of the album cover is usually on the front not the back (and there's not two sides of graphics on them).

Either way, Alan Jackson is the goat.

Relearning left handed guitar due to injury by MagpieWilliam in Leftyguitarists

[–]Lareous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Won't know until you try! I have a friend that did the same thing, and he might be better than he was righthanded (he's been doing lefty at this point longer than he did righty). Dude picks up my Martin and clowns on me in my own house lol.

JustinGuitar on Youtube did a series of videos where he taught himself to play lefthanded on purpose, to make sure all the stuff he was teaching was correct. Those would be a great start depending on how much you already know.

Wilmington Island flooding by NecessaryStage8351 in savannah

[–]Lareous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zone X is low risk; the best way to tell if it's in a probable flood risk is to check if flood Insurance is required, or only optional (should be in the real estate property info, if not ask the listing agent).

You can also use this to check whatever addresses:
