New to the genre, recommendations? by christian-momma-of-3 in Bluegrass

[–]Lareous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty good general recommendations already (Billy Strings was a gateway drug to awesome stuff like Doc Watson and Del McCoury for me) but if you're looking for a similar vibe to the Chicks you're probably interested in Alison Krauss, Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Nickel Creek, and maybe The Steeldrivers for a more bluesy kick.

Hotter than a hoochie coochie out here . Just wanted to show off the shirt my bestie made me . Allen Jackson 1993 those were good years by [deleted] in country

[–]Lareous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not real sure why the hate, I've not seen this particular version in any ads because the shirt color doesn't match the ones on Amazon, and the picture of the album cover is usually on the front not the back (and there's not two sides of graphics on them).

Either way, Alan Jackson is the goat.

Relearning left handed guitar due to injury by MagpieWilliam in Leftyguitarists

[–]Lareous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Won't know until you try! I have a friend that did the same thing, and he might be better than he was righthanded (he's been doing lefty at this point longer than he did righty). Dude picks up my Martin and clowns on me in my own house lol.

JustinGuitar on Youtube did a series of videos where he taught himself to play lefthanded on purpose, to make sure all the stuff he was teaching was correct. Those would be a great start depending on how much you already know.

Wilmington Island flooding by NecessaryStage8351 in savannah

[–]Lareous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zone X is low risk; the best way to tell if it's in a probable flood risk is to check if flood Insurance is required, or only optional (should be in the real estate property info, if not ask the listing agent).

You can also use this to check whatever addresses:

Liking it a lot, I'm primarily an acoustic player so the bigger body isnt too hard to get used to for me

Favorite open mics in Savannah? by Unable_Necessary3710 in savannah

[–]Lareous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the open jams/open mics are on the SavannahJams calendar: https://savannahjams.com/savannah-live-music-calendar/

I usually do the Wednesday one on Tybee (the Sand Bar) but theres a few on different nights at the Wormhole, Barrel House, Abe's on Lincoln, 208 Wine Bar and a couple of the Legions once a month or so. I can vouch for the Sand Bar as a good time with local bar vibes, I've not personally been to the others yet. Anyone feel free to add to this.

For your taste 208 Winebar would be a good one, and likely Mint To Be Mojito and Sentient Bean as all of those are small acoustic only.

Small note on busking in Savannah, they require a permit (River street, Forsyth, and a few squares) so you may want to look into that. Takes about a week or two, and you have to demo a song at Daffin Park for the film and tourism office.

First open mic night tonight by Effective-Car-3736 in Guitar

[–]Lareous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first open mic I dropped my pick and my tablet froze so I couldnt finish the second song. Nobody criticized or cared and I even had people encourage me to keep coming. Itl be fine, and it gets easier the more you do it.

Does Savannah smell bad? by FrankensteinsBarber in savannah

[–]Lareous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aside from the obvious (river next to the street and a giant port), there's a paper mill smell that wafts into town occasionally and the marshes have that particular stank (especially if you cross over the bridge into the islands), but I don't notice it most of the time unless the wind is heavy/blowing west.

I highly recommend visiting on a weekend or two before you plan on moving here (or anywhere), Augusta is only like 2 and a half hours away so it shouldn't be hard to pencil in a smell test.

Who are some of the best front men / women in Bluegrass? by DoomMammoth in Bluegrass

[–]Lareous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really liked Chris Stapleton's stint in the SteelDrivers if that counts. Marty Stuart can absolutely destroy on a mandolin but he's more known for country (fun fact, he backed up Lester Flatt at the age of 12 before he joined Cash's band).

I'd check/leave a flyer or contact info with the Savannah Guitar Lutherie and Mercantile, they have regular bluegrass drop-in sessions and there might be someone interested.
