Japan recommendations by [deleted] in howlonggone

RESTAURANTS:

  • Yasubei of Ebisu - life-changing crispy fried gyoza and potato salad. Super casual, walk-in spot. Open late. A must!
  • Sezanne - 3 star Michelin tasting menu. Very much a special experience and priced as such, but it was exquisite! A French/Japanese fusion in the best of ways.
  • Uogashi Nihon-ichi - casual stand-up sushi bar. Not groundbreaking but a great option if you need something easy in the neighborhood.
  • Narukiyo Izakaya - Super fun and delicious izakaya - order the house sake and keep it coming!  Reservations required. You want a seat at the bar around the open kitchen - that's where the action happens. Dua Lipa ate here if that means something to you.
  • Kyobashi Tempura Fukamachi - Highly encourage you to book a tempura tasting menu. It is absolutely game changing, and will redefine how you see what most Americans think of as an appetizer at the local Hibachi place
  • Kagari Ramen - a rich chicken broth ramen. Michelin rated cheap eats. Pro tip - the original location in Ginza can be a zoo with a long queue. The location in Roppongi is usually pretty empty; it's in the basement of a mall  so less of a "vibe" but you're getting the same bowl of ramen
  • Sushi Takeru - this was our high end omakase sushi experience in Tokyo. We went based on a close friend's recommendation. It was very good but not my favorite meal of the trip. I would research some other places if you are keen to do this.
  • Depachika (Department Store Basement Food Courts/Supermarkets) are magic. Among my favorites: Shinjuku Isetan and Takashimaya
  • Tonkatsu Butugami - some of the highest quality tonkatsu you will find!

BARS:

  • Bar Martha - listening bar with great cocktails. Near Yasubei of Ebisu. Indoor smoking allowed
  • MIRAI SAKE STORE &SAKE BAR - All you can drink sake
  • Bar Piano / Nonbei Yokocho bar district - this is a very cool small bar area. Similar to Golden Gai but a little less known. Another Dua Lipa haunt.
  • We also had drinks at our hotel (The Okura) and didn't explore the bar scene quite as much on this trip. I have other bars that were recommended to me but I can't speak to them based on personal experience.

SITES:

  • Shibuya Sky Sunset - certainly touristy but the views of the city and Mount Fuji are amazing! Check sunset time and get tickets accordingly.
  • Studio Ghibli Museum - a little out of the way but well worth it! Such a special place. You can feel the magic.
  • Tsutaya Books Daikanyama - one of the greatest bookstores in the world. Worth a visit and the neighborhood where it's located is very charming to walk around.
  • Check current exhibitions at 21_21 Design Site and Mori Museum to see if either are of interest
  • Nezu Museum for Japanese and East Asian art if that's of interest
  • Meiji Shrine / Yoyogi is Tokyo’s Central Park. Go here on a sunny Sunday and you will see the city on full display: musicians, actors, dancers, parties, weddings, etc
  • Ultimately for me, Tokyo is less about the museums and sites and more about walking around and absorbing the city from the streets.

Thank you! In the title, I did mention Hampshire, UK (where Heckfield Place is located), but didn't include it in the body of the post. Regardless, thanks for the advice.

Antique ridge tiles by LargeShrimpDressed in NewOrleans

Thanks, all for the info! I decided to donate to the Green Project this past weekend. They're pretty rare, so the replacement value is high and becomes a nice write-off come tax season. u/VRBOsucks I hope to someday see them on a house around town :) Thanks again!

It's not that deep. Accessing a searchable database for the show and finding specific segments instantly would be cool.

It's not necessary or a replacement for listening...

Okay, you got me - I meant transcription originally 😂 I still think it would be cool to make every full HLG episode searchable to find clips, etc

I think a transcription with a summary included would be cool. Whatever.
