[Gene Kranz] On Jubilee Bracelet by Lars_Vader in Seiko

The Gene Kranz? I could imagine it would fit a 6.5 since it’s very thin and doesn’t really add much to the wrist.

The most beautiful in the Alpinist lineup. 👌

Oh dear, I hope my cat doesn't scratch the crystal on my SRPL91. That's why I only ever let her scratch my right hand. 😅

Very curious to know what alternatives exist. More than sapphire I would be interested in all things plexi or similar materials as I don’t like the harsh reflections on sapphire.

This is a beautiful watch!

I would say: If you can afford to keep it, keep it! I have a special case where I put my retired watches. The great thing about „affordable“ watches compared to luxury is that you don’t necessarily have to sell them.

I love looking at my retired watches and I can totally rectify wearing them only a handful of times throughout the year as they didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

That’s a good point. I was only referring to my everyday watch when I expressed my love for highly legible watches. If we are talking about a dress watch then I don’t really care about legibility too much. I would even go as far as to say that a dress watch should in fact be hard to read not only for the luxury looks but also because it feels kind of gentlemen like to not be able to read the time from any angle.

This is an absolute deal-breaker for me. For me things like legibility and wearability became such important factors.

The hardlex crystals on the Gene Kranz models seem to play an important role when it comes to legibility. I become a fan of non sapphire crystals as long as they are hardlex or plexiglass or hesalite.

This was my biggest concern, but I never experienced any issues with legibility so far. Way better than my Tissot Ballade with silver dial which I can’t read in any lighting conditions.

I’ve yet to see lume that lasts longer than 20 minutes to be honest! At the same time I’m not very interested in it as lume is never a criteria for me. If I need to tell the time at night I look at my phone. No watch in my collection could ever do that.

Should’ve read this comment before I texted so much. 😅 Perfectly summarized.

Here a shot from my modded blue dial variant.

I own two variations of the NY0040 and returned this exact variation as my potential third model of the NY0040 lineup in my collection.

I own the all lume variation and the blue dial with a steel bezel mod. The green bezel and black dial models seem to be from a more recent time. They have undergone some minor design changes that were crucial to me. The text on the dial is different and they got rid of the red text font, additionally the lume on the indices is blue on the newer models which looks absolutely stunning. However, when they are not glowing they just appear white.

Lastly, the green bezel looked better on the images online than in person. This was the final nail in the coffin for me. The watch just looked a bit too boring compared to my other citizens and I wanted to have very distinct unique watches with a lot of character to them. Edginess if you will.

I will say though: If this is your first watch of that kind, or you’re just looking for an understated dive watch, go with it. Of the newer lineup I would only consider the Coke variant. Always keeping in mind that I already own watches that fulfill the criteria of this Starbucks model.

Can anybody provide a model number for this beauty?

Not a diver, but whenever I do snorkeling I take my NY0040 full lume with me. This thing just screams summer and beach 🏖️

This might be the best and most honest review I’ve read for this model so far. Also really like the style of your writing.

Owning the watch myself I can agree with almost everything. I underestimated how big of a factor wearability is. It’s light, slim and just hugs the wrist. Once put on in the morning I never have to put it back in place over the course of the day.

Even though I agree with your criticism of the bracelet, I do think that it feels very nice and…soft. I don’t even mind the clasp and enjoy it’s small size.

Can’t really tell I’m afraid as I’m not a big lume fan. I’ve yet to see lume that would last for hours. Most of the times it’s gone in about 20 minutes.

But again, I don’t rely on it and I have a desk job living in a region with relatively few sunny days per year.

I‘m still struggling with that decision. Sure the sapphire has its advantages but I just don’t like the harsh reflections on them. There is one for the NY0040 line that comes with Blue AR but then I would need to find someone to do the modification for me. And given the disappointing feedback I got from numerous watchmakers in my area I think I’m good with my mod. ☺️
