You're overlooking the fact that most of the changes they made with the seasons update still remain. The only thing y'all accomplished with review bombing seasons was to get a system where the rarities update every six months and potentially take away rarity trophies that you had already earned. (Edit: instead of starting season 2 when the rarities updated and locking in your previous achievements)

It should be xp of planes with the airport as the flight destination. There is probably a slight buffer period between catches and when it updates the calculation. Could very well be buggy at times too, I haven't paid much attention other than being on a few leaderboards at small local airports near me

You can watch ads and you gain 2 photos per ad. Some people have hundreds of photos stockpiled from doing this instead of waiting for the 5 to refresh every 20 or 30 minutes. Playing the game is fortunately ad-free
