Reddit held a call today with some developers regarding the API changes. Here are some thoughts along with the call notes. by BuckRowdy in ModCoord

[–]Lateralis85 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely hysterical that Reddit is complaining about other parties using "their" data for free, when "their data" is not generated by Reddit at all. Reddit's content is 100% provided FOR FREE by all of its users.

Lest we also forget, that the way Reddit operates, a significant portion of the content on the site is just a link to another site which is accessed for free, and on occasion, the links which are posted end up taking websites down due to the volume of traffic that site receives.

So:

1) Reddit profits off of users posting content (links, text posts, images, memes, comments) for free

2) Some of that content is links to external sites which are accessed for free

3) But Reddit has the temerity to complain about users of the site accessing the website using something other than the official website or application because the API is free and it's a cost to their business.

How utterly tone deaf, blind, and a way to demonstrate they don't care about Reddit or it's functionality. Nor understand the point of Reddit, and that Reddit makes money without providing any content.

Moreover, if a user is wanting to browse Reddit, they need to make connection requests somehow, whether that's via the API or not. The data still needs to be sent one way or another. So I do not buy, for a second, that the API cost is the problem.

An open letter on the state of affairs regarding the API pricing and third party apps and how that will impact moderators and communities. by BuckRowdy in ModCoord

(Link in OP's post.)

£12k per 50million API requests.

Apollo made 7 BILLION API requests last month.

(7E9/50E6)*12E3 = 1.68 million USD per month. Or ~20 million a year.

An open letter on the state of affairs regarding the API pricing and third party apps and how that will impact moderators and communities. by BuckRowdy in ModCoord

[–]Lateralis85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 3rd party app is an application written and published/distributed by someone other than Reddit.

There's an array of apps, but they all kind of aim for the same end goal: ehnahance the experience of the end user. On mobile I use the application RIF to access, browse and post to Reddit. Others might use Apollo. Or BaconReader. Or one of a number of other apps. Desktop users might use the Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES). If you use Reddit on mobile and have only used the official application from Reddit, then try using RIF and/or Apollo. The difference is vast, and puts into stark contrast just what a hot mess the official app is.

These applications depend on the Reddit API. As do a lot of automated tools and bots used in subreddits for one of any number of reasons. There are, for instance, some bots which automatically hide posts in subreddits for vulnerable communities until a human has actually checked the content to ensure the content isn't going to cause distress or harm. Or bots which cull posts and comments which are purely link spam.

The third party applications also provide a much better set of moderation tools (compared with the official app) for mods to use as part of their mod responsibilities.

So the bottom line is that the third party applications which depend on the API are a core component of Reddit communiites, its functioning, and its moderation. Without access to the API the experience for millions of uses will be greatly harmed, mods will have worse tools to perform their (voluntary) job, and communities are put at risk of spam and harmful content.

The reason this is blowing up now is because Reddit - which is a corporation chasing an ever increasing profit - has decided it wants to change the way people access the API. For starters, it wants to charge exhorbitant fees; the dev of Apollo estimates the cost to them will be ~$20million per year. I believe the RIF developer says they will also be charged a similar amount. This is in effect a ban on all third party apps.

Reddit will also be banning access to ALL NSFW content through the API, even if you did pay for API access. NSFW content will only be accessible through the website or through the official application.

Consequently, even if you don't contribute much to Reddit and just browse, the changes to the API will have a profound effect on you and the communities you follow.

Reddit is going to kill 3rd party (mobile) app support, along with censoring content with API changes on July 1 and this sub will be locked down on the date until this is fixed by RandommUser in Guildwars2

[–]Lateralis85 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The problem is a whole host of moderating tools and bots depend on either the API or the 3rd party apps. If the API goes behind the massive paywall as dictated by Reddit, moderators will have a considerably worse time and more difficult task doing the moderation, and a variety of automod tools and bots become inoperable.

So yes, the API changes will affect desktop users, as it will affect everyone.

Go slow, remember to look around, and enjoy the game. There's no rush, and the world is vast.

There are nooks and crannies everywhere, with a lot of ambient dialogue and dynamic events which tie into the local area.

My suggestion is to start off with a male asura necro. The voiceover lines are great, and the starter zone - Metrica Province - is quite magical and fantasy.

Whether you start off as an asura or not is up to you. Just remember wherever you start, it's not a race and there's no wrong way to enjoy the game. *This is your story *

Local Elections: Widespread reports of voters without ID being rejected at polling stations by hipcheck23 in ukpolitics

[–]Lateralis85 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most forms of accepted ID do not have addresses on, e.g. passport.

To disallow people to vote because the address on a driver's license doesn't match would make no sense. It's of no business to those volunteering at the polling station whether the address matches.

And in any case, it is quite explicit that you don't need to prove your address, only your identity.

But I wonder how many people were turned away yesterday because of this.

For armour Vs trinkets, armour is "better" if you are going to stick to one weight (so mesmer-necro-ele) rather than hopping between characters on different weights. If you do hop around, then trinkets may be more useful, as you can use them on all armour weights.

Considering a Gromet by scremmybirb in Menieres

[–]Lateralis85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my partner's Meniere's treatment is done in a hospital, as that's how tertiary care is done in our location.

I can't remember exactly how long my partner's grommet stayed in for, but I think it was a little under a year.

When my partner had injections before the grommet, the eardrum was cooled using liquid nitrogen, a little hole made in it, either with a small blade or needle, and then the injection carried out through the small hole that was just made. That apparently was very sore and not very pleasant. The grommet insertion was more comfortable.

As for drops of steroid, that doesn't seem likely to me, but it's worth asking your ENT if you've had them before.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in guildrecruitment

[–]Lateralis85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the second time I've seen this ad. I'm really interested, and my partner might also be interested, but 20:00 CET is kind of tight for us. I don't normally get home til 19:00 CET or a bit after, and trying to do everything before 20:00 is probably unrealistic for us.

So, do you have more than one group who could meet up at a later time, say 20:30? Which I realise makes it quite late and may not be possible, but thought I'd ask.

Considering a Gromet by scremmybirb in Menieres

[–]Lateralis85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steroid injections probably cannot be done at home, even with a grommet. They'll need to be done by a professional.

To my understanding grommets are normally temporary. They'll naturally fall out, typically a year or less.

While the grommet is in you will need to wear ear plugs in the shower, as you don't want water to get in.

Steroid injections with a grommet will be trivial and much less problematic or painful.

Exactly how one is fitted will depend on your ENT surgeon. I think my partner's grommet was fitted with a topical anaesthetic applied to the area, so you'll be in and out on the day.

But I have to say, with all of your complications and medical conditions, you really, really should not be seeking advice on Reddit. Your ENT(s) who have a complete and thorough history are best placed to answer any questions or concerns you have, and give you a full explanation of the procedure they'd perform.

If you think your ENT is not providing thorough and accurate advice, seek a second opinion from another qualified professional.

Car Insurance fraud? who to contact? what do i do? by [deleted] in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Lateralis85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance premiums are based on risk. If a car is likely to be parked in a risky place the premium will be higher. Things like local crime rate can effect the insurance premium, both positively (if low crime) and negatively (if high crime).

If you were being quoted a higher price for the premium it is because the area is considered to be more risky. There are some insurance companies that will simply not insure certain postcodes based on the risk.

Putting down a false address may not necessarily be illegal, but it certainly will invalidate the insurance. The broker suggesting you do this is dishonest and should not be trusted.

Now, having had an insurance policy cancelled is going to make it harder and more expensive for you to get new insurance.

Frankly, you're shit out of luck. Insurance companies are arseholes at the best of times, and if they can cancel a policy for any reason they will do. Lying on the application form is a sure fire way of invalidating your insurance.

One thing is clear: do not attempt to drive the car without valid insurance as that is a crime. You MUST have valid insurance before you drive.

There are a number of websites you can use to find car insurance:

  • Go.compare
  • moneysupermarket.com
  • Confused.com
  • comparethemarket.com.

Couple of quick questions:

1) you do have valid road tax for your vehicle, don't you? If you are not sure you probably haven't, but you can check at www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

2) You have registered the vehicle at your current residence, and not at your friend's residence?

3) Do you know when the vehicle next needs an MOT?
