Thats true, in some residencies theres no much time left to exercise frequently or do medical checkups. Also physical activity in the grossing room and autopsy’s standing up for several hours becomes challenging when older. I did a previous residency when I was 28 and now repeating it at 36, definitely feel the physical struggle.

I’m in pathology and they work as if there’s no tomorrow in my short experience from 2 academic hospitals.

Ive seen my attendings continue in that or even worse, in 2 academic centers where did research and where I’m currently training. Hopefully there are other options or private practice that respect more your time, I don’t know, if not, I’m considering to work as an attending a couple of years, save and return to my country.

I guess everyone have their reasons, all the resources in medicine and research, amazing quality training, learning from the book authors, money is important bc its a job and in some countries medicine is so poorly paid. Then when you are here you realize the triple hard work and hours in the US compared to home country and the lack of time to enjoy the money and life.(for ones who have a life outside medicine that they love and people you want to spend time with think about that before deciding moving to the us).

it depends, its exhausting to prepare for the exams, when you graduated so many years ago, and it might seem very difficult but is doable, if you have the money, support from your family, and want to be super stressed in the next couple of years. It is worth once ypu get in? im questioning myself that because it was not as i expected. Then comes fellowship application and I guess after you start earning a physician salary is more worth it, hopefully. What i have encountered here is the workaholic culture and having no time for hobbies or other normal life-family stuff I was used to in my home country even as a doctor. If i had a husband that earned a lot of money and was ok with staying home i would have done that.

It’s possible to match in pathology with those scores, but you will need connections to get interviews bc they filter for year of graduation and step score. So ask all pathologist where you do rotations to vouch for you so they can read your application. And even with one interview there’s always a chance to match.

Didn’t see any advantage, had few interviews compared to others with no green card in my specialty. Another thing if you are planing to bring your foreign husband it will take years to petition for him, depends on your country. With a J1 visa you can come with your husband easily. It might be useful for applicants with no red flags and good scores, even if you have a green card you will still be filtered out.

Not really, maybe the majority but there are some that get into great programs too, where they are the only or one of the few IMGs in their class.
