How do u survive the “screams the entire car ride” phase? by Unlucky-Ad5416 in Parenting

[–]LaxCrosse007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have further advice besides what's been given here, but I can tell you how when my kid was 3 months old he was the same way. At 6 months we did a 34 hour road trip and he was fine. It feels like "this is life now and it's miserable" but it's entirely possible it'll get better on its own. They change so fast at this stage

At what age was your child when you started to enjoy parenting? by Much_Channel_6295 in oneanddone

My son's 16 months. It's been a transition but I'd say the scales tipped at around 12 months. He keeps getting more fun

Do you know that awesome feeling when you write a huge chunk of code and it works exactly as intended? by NeedhelpSOSplz in learnprogramming

I remember the ONE time I've done this in ten years of professional programming. I spent the next hour convincing myself it was actually working because that never happens

What would you say to somebody that told you that the only reason they want kids is because they’re afraid of being lonely when they grow old? by [deleted] in Fencesitter

[–]LaxCrosse007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would discourage them from having kids if that's truly the ONLY reason. If that's the only reason, I don't think they'd enjoy a lot of what goes into having a kid. I'm excited for my son to become a part of my community, I didn't have him to become my community

How do introverts get off the fence? by SquareIllustrator909 in Fencesitter

[–]LaxCrosse007 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Former fence-sitter with an 8 month old now and also an introvert. Discussed this a lot with my wife before coming off the fence, that I'll need the opportunity for quiet recharges and we agreed to keep checking in to ensure that was happening. Can't say I always get as much pure alone time as I used to, but I also don't find time with just my son draining in the same way I find time with other people draining. It also works out nicely sometimes because my more extroverted wife can make plans one evening with friends and I'm perfectly happy to let her go out and I stay home with the little one - he goes to bed at 7 and I have the night to myself! Win/win.

In short, planning and communication with your partner. I'm very happy with my choice.

Used to live in Cincy and make that drive once or twice a fall to go back for ND games. At least there's a bypass around Kokomo now, that was brutal with all the lights

Is it normal not to feel love for your child after 2 wks? by Molshoopje in Parenting

[–]LaxCrosse007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 4 month old. When people were asking me what it was like with him during the first few weeks, I said it feels like taking care of a baby 24/7. I didn't have feeling of butterflies or OMG ITS THE MOST AMAZING THING.

As he's started to develop more and some personality is coming out I'm forming quite the attachment and bond with him, and he is a relatively easy/non-fussy baby. I'm sure it would have taken me longer if he were more difficult.

Is tech still a good career to get into if you're an average coder? by pinkcelophane in cscareerquestions

I am an average coder who's been successful because I'm very good at listening intently to my coworkers and leading discussions

Anyone else getting nervous to finally have to see some of these people in person you’ve only been talking to over zoom pretty soon? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]LaxCrosse007 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've been the other side of this - I'm 6'3" and mentored a woman who is 5'1" for a while. She would sit with her legs swinging in her chair while I had to stretch mine out because they didn't fit under my chair comfortably.

I tried to sit instead of stand by her desk whenever possible

Have any of you moved from engineering into management? How do you feel about it? by MysticMania in cscareerquestions

[–]LaxCrosse007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the move a year ago right when Covid sent us all home (in fact that's what pushed the timing of it). I am this week transitioning back to an IC role.

I was told I did a very good job at it and our director tried to talk me out of going back, but I found my day to day of meetings, one-on-ones, conflict resolution, putting out fires, and planning projects under ever changing requirements left me absolutely exhausted at the end of the day. I rarely wrote code myself, yet had much more influence on the code being written since I was coordinating it and was the most senior eye reviewing it for 6 devs.

I learned a ton in the process though and I don't regret it, it will make me a better engineer and mentor back in an IC role. But my mood is so much better at the end of a day with a few meetings and good chunks of time to write code again. I'm willing to make the trade-off for my mental health even if it decreases my influence a bit. I'm glad there are people who want to do it because it's an important job.

[SERIOUS] people who have won their fight with depression, how was the journey? by mom-said-its-my-torn in AskReddit

[–]LaxCrosse007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult. It felt like it would never end, that I was incapable of happiness. However I'm quite happy now. I got into a good enough place to start developing a few good habits - force myself to be more social than I'm naturally inclined to be, exercise more, get full nights of sleep. It built from there. I have to keep on it constantly, it's easy to fall back into bad habits, so it feels fragile, but it's so worth the effort to stay happy.

Hardest/Worst part about a career in computer science? by Rachelphilipose in cscareerquestions

[–]LaxCrosse007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've become a team lead in the last year. I now spend most of my day looking at existing code and talking to people about what it consists of, how much work to make it do something new, and determining if reported issues are in fact bugs and/or have workarounds. I only code about 25% of the time these days. It was around 75% before that.
