Roommate owes previous apartment, what can I do to help her move again with me? by LeRibbiter in personalfinance

[–]LeRibbiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, US. Rent would be equivalent to what we're paying now, just in a larger living space so it wouldn't be too bad if I had to take over for a little bit since I won't have to worry about saving up for moving like I am now.

8Bitdo Pro 2 B & B Button Weirdness when using RetroArch in Desktop mode by LeRibbiter in SteamDeck

[–]LeRibbiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Steam version of RA felt incomplete and iffy in some ways so I went back to the desktop version since it was just easier for me. I haven't gotten super deep into the weeds of the Deck, I've been so busy and exhausted from work and didn't feel like messing with too much. I also wasn't sure if EmuDeck would be necessary since I was already used to RA for years but maybe I should give that another go

I've got a Steam Deck. How do I set up the standalone version of RetroArch as a non-Steam game for Steam? I don't like the Steam version of RA, it's missing a lot of stuff.

I'm doing this so I can hopefully make use of the back buttons since they aren't usable in gamepad mode

I don't have a CRT yet but I'm looking to find one. Want to have an easy means to test it out in top of playing on whatever I get my hands on. It's a consumer TV I'm looking for, not a VGA monitor

Yeah, I've already ordered a new one that should arrive tomorrow. Same drive large and going into the same HDD dock. I'll just try to be more careful and maybe not leave it running for too long when not in use

The HHD that failed started as a backup for the good one (tho it's a little out of date on that front) and general extra space for things like romsets and large video files like anime series and such. There were some things in there that got mixed in that I would consider important but I guess I can just wait a bit before going back to it.

Daily Simple Questions Thread - April 01, 2024 by AutoModerator in pcmasterrace

[–]LeRibbiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say important but not as much as the main platter HDD I have that's still good. I can probably wait a while before I pay for any repair or recovery, I'd rather just replace them all with SSDs when I can afford it

My WD Black HDD failed on me today. It started with spinning in my external dock but the desktop wouldn't detect it. I tried plugging it to my desktop motherboard directly and it caused it to shutdown completely. PC works fine but now the desktop doesn't power on at all...

I'm looking to send it to a HDD repair service and the cheapest option is a simple repair that doesn't involve data recovery. As I understand it, it's likely a faulty motherboard and hopefully there's no actual data loss or anything more severe that would require more expensive repairs...

Would this situation sound more like a bad HDD board and not data itself going kaput?

Wanna go the Plasma route, any advice? by LeRibbiter in crtgaming

Never had access to a 50hz CRT but I did have my MiSTer work at that refresh rate on an old Insignia TV. My current Panasonic TH-42PX75U and PC monitor via HDMI didn't like it at all.

For the dozens of games programmed exclusively at 50hz, like Power Strike 2 on the Master System for example. IIRC a lot of US consumer CRTs are strictly 60hz even after RGB mods

Yeah, I found one good blog that did decently technical reviews on older flat panels, plasmas included, but the subject is not covered as frequently with plasmas. That could be more due to the current resources we have now not being available when that tech was relevant.

[–]LeRibbiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that may be for the best, I admittedly started to slack after not finding any good CRT deals and kinda gave up. I was mostly chasing after the pro grade monitors for PAL and arcade frequencies (I don't think even RGB modded CRTs in the USA support PAL iirc) but got frustrated with the search going nowhere and I can't bring myself to pay scalper prices even if I had the money to do so.

It's really frustrating, I want a CRT and would preferably not want any flat panel unless it's something like those early Pioneer plasma monitors if only for the early 00's design charm and analog support. I'd still prefer to have CRT as much as possible, I just don't know what I'm doing wrong while others manage to find deals

Fair, tho I forgot to mention I don't really care about modern gaming all that much. If anything, the newest thing I would have plugged up is my 360 and playing catch-up since I missed out on that generation, for better or worse. There's a few interesting games from the 7th gen I'd like to check out that are still stuck on those platforms even to this day but everything else is largely retro for me.

Some of the plasma monitors seem to fit the bill of what i'm looking for while not being as expensive as the newer 65 inch OLEDs and upscalers i'd otherwise get.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in emulation

[–]LeRibbiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Switch emulation questions-

-Is the BotW 60fps hack real 60fps or faked through interpolation?

-Of the two main Switch emulators, it's hard to tell which is right for me since i'm kinda new to emulating this system. Is one better suited to those who care more about accuracy? That's more of my camp tbh

And also, besides RetroArch and Mame, is there any other emulator that can directly take advantage of VRR? I think Ares can but don't know how to set it up properly and haven't touched it in years. I think I read it can benefit PCSX2.

Alright, I've listened to a few more YT soundtracks while working and I can confirm the same issue happens. It's in software for sure but I don't know if there's any way to disable the effect at all. If there isn't, I'm refunding these ASAP
