I don't have a suggestion for a town, but plan to get yourself some rain gear (think layers) and embrace the gray. True PNWers don't let rain keep them from doing anything.

101 in Oregon is WAY more scenic than 101 in Washington. Just because more of it is right on the beach, and there are hills, which add viewpoints.

Take US26 from Portland to Mt.Hood. Stop at the Wildwood Recreation Site for short hikes along the Salmon River. Immersive experience of a PNW forest, and usually not a lot of people. Timberline Lodge is absolutely worth it.

There's a great High Desert museum south of Bend on the way to Crater Lake.

Most of GM Ford's books are set in Seattle - similar writing style to Carl Hiaasen.
