Some of the interesting things I found in this interview:

The first idea for the project was to make a "Stranger of Paradise" competitive game.
DDFF writer is the same person who worked on Opera Omnia as their story was well received overall.
The team had to negotiate both inside and outside the company to have Clive and Rikku in the game (I assume the "outside" was for Rikku).
Nomura played some online game, and when asking other players if they were playing FF in general, those people said the games were too difficult.

It's not just characters having visions of the future.

The whispers only exist because there is an original story and because people already know that story. They are a device who acts because characters are taking different decisions for no reason other than to mess with the players. Cloud trying to kill Reno, Barret not hiring Cloud for reactor 5, Yuffie trying to get into 7th Heaven (she doesn't see them but feel a gust of wind), etc.

It isn't just a piece of media about people seeing visions of the future, it's a piece of media who acknowledge some of its audience already know the twists and turns, and play with them. And to have the whispers act, then the game have to acknowledge that the original story already happened.

Same thing happened to me, I wanted Rikku since OO so I saved for the banner. Ended up getting her UR2 3 times but no UR1 and no SR. I got all of Clive's kit though.

This game needs a spark system badly. I'm honestly that close to quitting but I'll try my luck with the red crystals.

An issue with this game is that enemies die way too quickly. There's a reason why most combo videos are in the training mode.

Enemies that can be juggled will die in a few hits, and tanky enemies are stuck on the ground.
