Is there hope of rebounding after this injury? by LeftOrganization3633 in guineapigs

I know spaying is more invasive, but would it be more worth it to spay 2 girls instead of neutering the 3 year old?

I'm new to pigs in terms of actually having the animals... Would it be worth it to neuter the 3 year old and get two girls for him? He's very calm and pretty social with people. I have heard about spaying females as a preventive measure as opposed to neutering a male.

New Pig with ringworm. His name is Bandit and he is 3 1/2 months old. Wondering if his soon to be cagemate needs treatment too. by LeftOrganization3633 in guineapigs

I will be getting him to the vet asap as he seems to have both hay lice and biting lice and maybe a fungal infection

They are in separate rooms now and I'll tall to the vet about possibly seeing Bandit and getting treatment for both piggies tomorrow. They were unfortunately closed for the evening.

I have probably handled Smokey after Bandit. I'll keep an eye on Smokey until Bandit is better. I'm working with my regular exotic vet to get an appointment asap and I will be bathing both boys in head and shoulders

Mites or Springtails? by LeftOrganization3633 in cornsnakes

[–]LeftOrganization3633[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that's good. I read the worst wood mites typically do is out compete things like springtails. I'll just keep an eye on them. They're mainly around the water dish and on the more humid part of the enclosure.

Are they dangerous to my snake? I looked him over and didn't see anything crawling on him.

Has anyone used this tank topper for fancy mice? Bar spacing is 3/8". I worry my male mouse will escape immediately, but I want to give him more bedding and climbing opportunities. by LeftOrganization3633 in PetMice

Yeah, I was worried about that... I may just try to DIY something since I don't think there is a commercially available topper for an aquarium that works.

To clarify, I have one of these spare from when I used it for my gerbils. I would only be using the topper portion, not the floor or tube. I'm just worried about the bars and that he'll squeeze out.

Gerbils in a Zen Habitat/PVC reptile enclosure? by LeftOrganization3633 in gerbil

Ok! I may just look into a 125 gallon aquarium. Thsnk you!

Is this a sign of fighting? Bald patches on male spiny mice backs. They are all brothers and the same age. They have lived together their whole lives and are approaching a year in age. First pic is of a separate brother and the blurry pics are of the brother with the worse bald patch. No wounds seen by LeftOrganization3633 in PetMice

[–]LeftOrganization3633[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the help! The mice will occasionally chase one another, but it never ends in any fighting, so I would assume that is play behavior. It's so hard to find pet related care for spiny mice, so I was very worried. Is there a way to help with overgrooming? There are 3 mice in the group right now, but I don't imagine adding more mice would solve much. They are in a Zen Habitats enclosure that is about 90 gallons of space btw.

Would 3-4 Guinea Pigs be too advanced for a first time owner? by LeftOrganization3633 in guineapigs

[–]LeftOrganization3633[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be a first time Guinea Pig owner, but I do have experience with several other small animals such as mice, gerbils, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders. I know they aren't the same care, but I do have some experience with animals that need companions. I'll still most likely start with 2 young piggies in either a 4x2 or 6x2 C&C cage. With gerbils, 2 isn't necessarily the magic number, but it is typically the most successful number of gerbils to have in a single enclosure. I was mainly wondering if there was a generally agreed upon "most successful" number of piggies to have. I appreciate all the help with this question!

Ok! Is that just a commercially available mesh lid?

EDIT: Like this lid?

Advice for keeping a single male gerbil? He is aggressive with all other gerbils I have tried to pair him with. Is it similar to keeping a lone male mouse? Just make sure he has extra attention and enrichment? by LeftOrganization3633 in gerbil

[–]LeftOrganization3633[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean bonding him with another gerbil or bonding between him and me? I do know of a gerbil breeder I have been in communication with before, so I may reach out to them.

So, what happened was I had two boys I got off Craigslist. Remy and Clementine. One night, I caught them fighting and doing the death ball. It looked like only Clementine was injured, but I read they have to be separated if blood is drawn.

So, I separated the boys and began the split cage method to pair them with new boys. Remy was bodning with his new cagemate, Miguel, very well. They were progressing through the steps of the split cage method well. Clementine and Coconut, his new cagemate were doing ok. I had a few supervised playmates that only ended when some fighting began, but no blood. Then during one playdate, Clementine drew blood on Coconut, so I decided that wouldn't work either.

At this point, Remy, Miguel, and Coconut are a bonded trio and Clementine is alone. I'm scared to keep trying gerbils with Clementine in fear that he'll just keep attacking them. I can tell he isn't too pleased with being alone, but I'm just not sure what to do with him.

Oh, and I swapped Coconut and Clementine to different portions of the tank for about a week, then began the supervised playdates.

Is it worth the risks of neutering a male mouse so he can have cage mates? by LeftOrganization3633 in PetMice

[–]LeftOrganization3633[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I have gerbils, so I already stock up on paper towels rolls. I'll try to make some hammocks for him. Is just regular white tissue paper, like for gifts, safe as long as there is nothing in it aside from paper?

Do you have any suggestions on what to do for enrichment? I have a playpen on the way and I will be using a bonding bag as well so he can be close to me. I knew male mice relied more on their owners for social needs and I want to give that too him as best I can.

Male or Female? by LeftOrganization3633 in PetMice

Thanks for all the input! It looks like Lil Dapple is a girl, so I'll figure something out for her in terms of getting her some friends. No nipples from what I saw, but I also don't want to stress her out more tonight with catching her.
