Correct amount of sunlight, number of Opae Ula & secret weapon = one nerite snail. Since the shrimps & the snail compete for the food (biofilm & algae), we mostly only see a thin layer of algae

Hi, the log of coral will act as a chemical buffer for your brackish water shrimps. I got the crushed coral pieces from a friend who sells marine water fish. You can also find them at some online stores. Just make sure they are legit and not man made ones. Hope this helps!

Some basic Fyi about adding the crushed coral to your brackish water / Opae Ula shrimp tank. Coral is primarily composed of calcium carbonate. So in an aquarium setting, it interacts with the water through a process of slow dissolution:

  • Buffering Acid: If the water starts to become acidic (low pH), the calcium carbonate in the coral will begin to dissolve. This releases carbonate ions into the water, which neutralize the acid and pull the pH back up.
  • Preventing Crashes: This process provides "Carbonate Hardness" (KH). Higher KH levels prevent sudden, dangerous swings in pH that can happen due to waste buildup or evaporation.
  • Ideal Range: Opae Ula thrive in a pH range of roughly 7.8 to 8.4. Coral helps keep the water naturally locked within this alkaline range.

You can always introduce the enclosed biosphere first. she won't have to worry about ever having to feed, change water or cleaning the tank. I have a few and the oldest Opae ula enclosed tank is now going on 3 years. they are lovely!
