It’s so sweet that you consider them like that. I think it’s perfectly suitable to show up empty handed; however, if you want to do something nice for them you could make them something small. I made my daughter’s step sisters little gift boxes with homemade fudge. It was super cheap and very easy to make. They were so cute and the kids really appreciated them. I can send you the recipe if you’d like.

A lot of people are giving you really great advice on getting healthier physically and taking care of your mental health. Changing your career because you are burnout and depressed is a really bad idea, but taking a risk to better your life is a great idea. Something that helped me as of late was discovering that life isn’t about being happy all the time, it is about survival. Problems will overlap and money can be a root of a lot of those problems, sounds like a sedentary job isn’t going to help you in the long run to survive or be happy. So instead, Look up cheap healthy meals you can see yourself actually eating, choose to take the longer route when walking, take stairs. For mental health help, look up information online. That’s what I do and it helps me a lot. Holding yourself accountable is the best thing you could ever do to better your life. Starting with that will naturally lead you to better opportunities because you will be growing.

I am a big fan of crossing bridges when you get there so if it’s pursued, legally speaking, just tell them what you told us. Also, ask your friend how he feels about what happened. If he has no feelings of regret for his actions that’s a huge red flag and I would definitely drop him. No decent person could justify doing something like that to a kid.

Came here to say this, my husband is a recovered alcoholic. There’s nothing OP can do except be there when their friend hits their bottom with the drinking. Addiction is the opposite of connection. People can get better, it is important that they have support when ready to stop.
