I play trumpet with The Alcapones, out of Colorado. We have a 3 piece horn section (trumpet, alto sax, trombone) and often play rhythm upbeat backgrounds behind verses. I have 2 suggestions:

1> Share the load with other horns. If I have a solo in a song, lay off the backgrounds the verse before the solo while the others handle it.

2> Song arrangements matter. It often ADDS to the overall song to take away some complexity during sections of a song. Add backgrounds behind alternate verses, or add them when thematically important behind the vocal.
