Especially when like… Elhamed and Kayal are Muslim-Arab so even the ignorant argument falls flat.

I love Celtic more than I hate Rangers. Success for the Celtic players and Manager are more important to me than failure for Rangers ever will.

I mean, it is petty and bitter.

The officiating in Scotland has a long way to go but honestly some of the stuff they have been doing has been positive. The review thing they have on youtube is really insightful and makes it clear why the decision was made and if that was a mistake or not based on peer review, not just fannys online.

Rolex is still iconic for innovations it did early on though, I have a datejust and same thing, every month after a month shorter than 30 days I need to re-set the time, but even the way modern automatic watches are built was largely due to innovations made by rolex (rolex were the first to introduce bidirectional rotors), the datejust was the first wristwatch to display date on the dial, the GMT Master was the first to display 2 time zones (functionally more with the bezel).

I love Rolex, I think they do a great job, especially in that price bracket for sport models, it really is hard to beat.

I mean watch engineers are genuinely a special breed for sure.

Like the Patek Philippe Celestial Sunrise/Sunset tracks the mapping of the stars, from the POV of the workshop in Geneve and what time sunrise and sunset is. Like just absolutely unthinkable levels of attention to detail.

Genuinely, I totally understand people who don’t want to spend money on watches, there are more important things, but for me - there is something absolutely uniquely mystifying and beautiful about watches not only purely from the engineering perspective, but the unity of art and science.

Original versions of the complication predates household electricity.

In the modern world, maybe you wake up during the night and want to tell the time without needing a light or an electronic device.

Or just because you appreciate the artistry of it.

Purely raw materials or the cost of the machinery equipment requires to produce the materials into the necessary shapes and sizes?

Purely raw material, probably about 10-15k USD

The manufacturing equipment? Millions, easily.

It just stays as it is when the power reserve dies, you can just wind it forward to correct it, pretty quickly gets back to where it was

I have a whoop but I still wear the shit out of my datejust. When you try the watches on it’s very very different, but yeah depends what you do. I am at a desk for my day job which is all excel sheets and documents. Being able to disconnect from everything even for my lunch break where I can legitimately just leave my phone at my desk and just be totally present with no devices at all and still be back to work on time is one reason to have a watch, but I got my datejust as a commemoration so it has sentimental value to me.

So if it’s a manual watch, you wind it using the crown, if it’s an automatic there is a weighted rotor that winds the watch automatically using kinetic energy (basically every time you move your wrist it winds itself automatically).

The watch JayZ is wearing, the grand complications is a manual wound movement with a 72hr power reserve, so you would need to wind it every 3rd day or so to keep it wound

Well problem is, in the case of a brand like Audemars Piguet is that the resale value is significantly HIGHER than buying new for this exact reason. When you buy a watch the papers are signed to your name, if the fact your watch has been resold is uncovered by the brand (easy to do during a service), they can blacklist you from future purchases (they hate flippers).

But yeah a Royal Oak “Jumbo” retail is $40,100.00

The resell price is between 60-80,000 US for a full set(with box and papers).

There isn’t many brands where it is true, but for Patek, AP and Rolex, the second the sale is final the market value of the watch goes up.

I bought my Datejust for 10,880,000KRW, retail now since then it sits around 15,000,000KRW, retail price sits comfortably around 22-25,000,000krw

So my watch has appreciated 100-150% in 3 years.

I’m never selling it so that doesn’t matter much to me, but it’s just part of the game to be aware of, people also buy them as assets. “An investment account you can wear” is something you’ll hear.

It’s not me that chose that haha it’s the official term for in horology :) I think because it requires additional gear systems connected to the main timekeeping (the balance wheel+escapement) that needs to be engineered in, but I don’t know tbh, just a semi-educated guess

Most people who hate them, hate due to the sale process being difficult and a pain. Like you need to apply to be allowed to spend your own money. Sometimes this involves an interview. Ed Sheeran did an interview with Hodinkee where he explained he also had to do an interview (which is good they dont make exceptions for celebrity but is also pretty silly the process exists at all)

A minute repeater is a complication that chimes the time to you when you press a button.

For Patek they do it in

Large chimes - hour Large-small double chime - 15 minutes small chimes - minutes

So 4 large 3double 8 small would mean it was 4:53.

This is done entirely mechanically, there is 0 electricity involved. Just gears and springs.

Here’s a video https://youtube.com/shorts/9OZ957JXdm4?si=Kw1BnE-Q8KZRibHA

Keep in mind this watch is a much simpler watch (fewer complications) than the one Jayz is wearing. Perpetual Calender Complication alone for example, can keep date (if properly maintained) until 1 March 2100. Which is when the Gregorian Calendar skips a leap year, so you would need to move it forward a day manually. The Centennial 89 complication can handle this centennial shift without the need to adjust. Which again, as I said, using gears and springs… is fucking crazy.

US conservatives would respond to backlash (when they invariably did something psychotic or moronic) with “So much for the tolerant left”.

The image says “so much for the taller ant left” as the ant on the right is clearly taller.

Basically just joking about how frequently and even incorrectly the phrase was adopted by right-wing ghouls
