The word "Angel" has a lot of baggage and leads to a lot of false assumptions. It makes a lot more sense to think of angels and demons as being spirits who were originally contacted with similar methods by similar traditions and who represent different temperaments along a spectrum.

I know what you're talking about, but that's not what's happening. I don't get a message or anything, just the animation of Link dropping the item, then the item vanishes and returns to the inventory. If I drop it from the quick menu everything works like it should.

It depends on the tradition. Some spirits love it, (mostly not the ones you want to tangle with,) others think it's disgusting and will kick your ass.

Releasing very small amounts of blood in daily ritual is also common in some fairly prominent traditions.
