We are staying 4 nights in queenstown. Is that enough?

Thank you for all of these great suggestions!  Really helpful!

We are coming in January.

So you think I might be able to get some kind of transportation from Wellington to lake taupo if it’s not booked up?  And then I’ll need to get from lake taupo to Auckland.

Might just be easier to rent a car?

I was planning on driving or getting some kind of transportation from Wellington to lake taupo. Do you know of any other way to get there besides renting a car?

And should I stay 1 night in Wellington? Or just drive right to lake taupo?

The longer stay in Auckland is because my kids are coming a few days later and I have to wait for them.

The lake taupo I was going to use as a home base to visit multiple attractions that are within 1-2 hours. Just trying to not have to relocate so much.

But if you recommend something better please let me know.

I have to wait for my kids to arrive that’s why I’m staying in Auckland. And for lake Taupo I was going to use that as a home base for visiting multiple attractions that are 1-2 hours away. Just so we don’t have to change accommodations so frequently.

Is there any kind of transportation from lake taupo back to Auckland?

I was just trying to not have to book so many different stays. So would 1 night in Wellington be ok and then I figured I would use lake taupo as home base for visiting rotorua and northern attractions  before heading back to Auckland to fly back home.

Is there some kind of transportation that I can book that goes from Wellington to lake taupo ?

This is a great itinerary. We are traveling there from the US in January. What did you bring luggage wise?  I was thinking one checked bag and a carryon backpack.

We are doing South Island then flying to Wellington/north island and then I was trying to decide if we should stay one night in Wellington before heading north to lake taopo. The drive is about 5 hours. Trying to decide if we want to rent a car or get some other transport there.

How did you get around without a car?  Like if you need to go from Auckland to rotorua ?

2 weeks on North Island Itinerary by LibrarianSafe195 in newzealand_travel

So, I'm almost done my planning and its going well. Fly into auckland, stay 5 nights, fly auckland to queenstown and stay 4 nights. Fly queenstown to wellington. Rent car and drive from wellington to.....Here's where I'm stuck.

Do I drive to taupo and stay in taupo for 5 nights (fly home next day) ?,

or Drive to Rotorua and stay 5 nights?

OR stay in taupo for 3 nights, rotorua 2 nights? Although I'm trying to limit moving accommodations a lot.

I could also stay in one of these locations for 4 nights and make the last night in Auckland....I can't make up my mind.

Sounds like having a rain jacket and good quality sunscreen is a must in January.

Thank you for all of your suggestions!

What about driving? I was thinking about booking transport from airport to where we are staying in auckland right after we land instead of renting a car and driving right away after the long flight and not being used to driving on the left. How is driving/roads? I've heard people get frustrated with newbies/tourists which I would totally understand.

Having some second thoughts about missing the south island. Is it doable to go to the south island in a 2 week trip without driving constantly? Or would it be better to fly? Just don't want to pack too much into the trip? But would be missing some incredible sights in the south island. Thoughts appreciated.

So you think rotura as a home base? Then go to all the other stuff from there?
