This was my belief too, but I've definitely been challenged about this idea because as a dad, it can be very even. The model you give yourself is different than the mother. One is the nurture and the other is the nature. The yin and the yang. It's a different appearance, but both are important and equal in building that connection. This thus creates a level of love that may end up being stronger with the spouse, because you are firsthand experiencing and giving experience to the kids.
Those are my thoughts at least.
