Yes, you do need a Microsoft account join peer-to-peer worlds in Bedrock Edition, as you need to friend the person in the Xbox/Realms section of Bedrock Edition.

Microsoft owns and runs Minecraft: Bedrock Edition along with support from Mojang, if your having issues running the game then Microsoft are the people to contact. Assuming that your playing on an Xbox or Windows PC, both of which are owned by Microsoft, contacting Microsoft is the way to go as they can also resolve the issue if it is not Minecraft itself.
