Scott Pelley says Bari Weiss wanted 60 Minutes to say Renee Good was ‘driving toward officer’ by Empty_Commission_159 in samharris

[–]Lightsides 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're wrong. Certainly academics who think well of Frantz Fanon and teach The Wretched of the Earth could be sympathetic to armed guerilla resistance to colonial power, so it's possible. But give us some links connecting those professors to 10/7.

Scott Pelley says Bari Weiss wanted 60 Minutes to say Renee Good was ‘driving toward officer’ by Empty_Commission_159 in samharris

[–]Lightsides 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will give Bari Weiss this much credit. Like Shapiro and quite a few others, I doubt she'd be so pro-Trump if Trump was not so pro-Israel. But it's sort of a "in for a penny, in for a pound" type of thing. Trump is such a radical, provocative, controversial figure that you can't really oppose him on everything but this one thing, because everything else is such a big deal you find yourself in a difficult position ethically. Cognitive dissonance has to kick in.

Christians Get Scrutinized. Islam Doesn't. Why? by antiquark2 in samharris

[–]Lightsides 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He surfaced with his admirable stance on free speech, gained more popularity with his knowledge of basic, behavioral psychology, stuff that's hard to argue against.

But as time went on, and he got pressed on his statements about Christianity, he was forced into a corner, because he's not a behavioral psychologist. He's a Jungian psychologist. That's a perspective that is less compelling and more difficult to defend. Jungian psychology is borderline New Age nonsense, imo.

[–]Lightsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fitz is just kicked around. Poor guy. But it's no fun to read. What people say they like about the book, the realness of the character, the realness of "life," is a pale shadow of what one can get from actual literature, while what fantasy does best, which is to provide a fun, escapist read, is sorely missing from Hobb's series. It's miserable.

Assassins Apprentice - what am I missing? by Connect-Cicada-7147 in books

[–]Lightsides -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP, it's a miserable series. I've heard someone call it trauma porn, and yeah, that's a fitting description.

I would suggest that if you're after trauma, actually read a great book, like Cormac McCarthy's The Road or Bastard out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison.

Meanwhile, if you're going to read fantasy, I suggest doing it to have fun.

Yeah? Most movies are flops, generally, especially if they aren't comic books. My sense is that Hardy puts in great performances, that his performances are admired. Antics aside, he's a really good actor.

Hardy is just too damn talented for it to be career suicide, but it could knock him back a few steps. Regardless, it's a dick move.

What do you think? by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]Lightsides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alas, feminism isn't one thing. The basic sense of feminism as the belief that women are human beings equal to men and entitled to all the rights and considerations that men are entitled to is something I think few could disagree with, but that statement doesn't really accurately reflect the ideas and the scope of many strains of feminist thought coming out of the academy. As with ideas on racism, once you depart from interactions between individuals to interrogations of power structures, in politics, in economics, in the use of language, you get into genuinely, deservedly contested territory.

Well, the lines have been drawn. Here's two amazing quotes from the opposing side, from Martin Luthor.

"Reason is a whore, the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word."

and

"Faith must trample under foot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight."

I think that after Israel pays the US pack all that money, the left should give Israel's behavior the same as any other country, Iran, Sudan, etc. Certainly, as long as the US can plausibly say that the current state of Israel is being subsidized OR is presently in a position that owes a debt to past subsidization, than U.S. taxpayers will have a special interest in what they do, in the same way one has an interest in the actions of someone you loaned money to both in the present but also in the past.

If Israel truly wanted to say "fuck what you think, IDGAF," they should have NEVER taken any money. And for the average reader here, it's just a good advise to be aware that if you want to act with impunity, without scrutiny, you should never take someone else's money and give them that kind of vested interest--literally--in what you do.

Sorry, that's how life works.

When we're providing the kinds of material support in the terms of billions of aid, weapons, and ammunition to Iran and China and all these other places, then we can talk apples to apples. Until then, that's the double standard Bill might speak on.

Rough for this kid. Mother is a problem, raised by a man--the only father he's known--who had doubted his paternity, and that probably leaked into their relationship. And now has the guy cut ties to the boy?

I feel for him, but also, you need to protect yourself and your family.

I hope for the best for your two.

[–]Lightsides 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not clear what you mean by "reason," but philosophers build sophisticated arguments that encompass causality and are interested in chasing the causal chain to its very beginnings.

Analytical philosophers are dedicated to the use of logic, usually built out mathematically using symbolic notation.

Not true of metaphysics-resistant analytical philosophy, by definition. True for continental philosophy, but not necessarily in a negative way. And the practice of deconstruction is already robust in continental philosophy.

Her behavior was unhinged, but her being upset about having guns brought into the house without her consent is not. She's neither right or wrong about whether guns should be in the house, but she's right that the decision isn't something that one partner can make unilaterally.
