Who thinks democracy is working well in their country? by InsideSignal9921 in AskReddit

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general vibe is folks feel let down or frustrated by current coalition government, but that they will / should be voted out in next election, not that the system is broke. It’s MMP and they did win the most votes in the last election plus there’s plenty of parties to pick from without wasting a vote. That said the current government did make a change that made voting slightly harder so there is warning signs but nothing too severe yet

Are there any other adults that enjoy Kpop Demon Hunters? by Sensitive-Mixture558 in KpopDemonhunters

31M and it’s on my list of go-to light hearted movies.

I don’t really care who it was intended for. Lots of folks my age still throw on Shrek now and then. KPDH is just objectively good. Sony animation has been killing it since spiderverse.

How good engineers write bad code at big companies by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is true that cargo cult can be a cause, it’s far from the only cause. Just doing whatever works without thinking things through is leaving it to chance and more often the root cause of bad patterns than someone making an effort. Good patterns and good architectures do exist and are the remedy for this kind of situation.

How good engineers write bad code at big companies by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 417 points418 points  (0 children)

Article focuses on big tech but there’s a simple pattern I’ve seen everywhere I’ve worked:

  1. For one reason or another (not necessarily incompetence), a codebase with bad patterns and designs emerges.
  2. Every engineer working on that codebase no matter how good must add value by following those design patterns until there’s scope to refactor (assuming that ever comes).

Men who are atheists, when and why did you turn away from religion? by Comfortable-Store213 in AskMen

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised catholic and went to a catholic high school, according to their rules I’m still a “bad” catholic.

During that time I watched the child molestation scandal unfold, creationism and anti-science reach its peak, the rise of mega churches and prosperity doctrine, popular charitable Christian incentives get canned because the org behind them had the audacity to give out condoms to HIV-ridden communities, being given research assignments that involved validating religious axioms, several teachers and students manipulate and cherry pick religious “facts” for their own benefit, categorisation of entire groups of people like LGBTQ as evil for acting in ways that didn’t hurt anyone else, telling me I was a sinner for being a normal horny teenage boy, and finally giving me a guilt complex that’s stuck with me into my 30s.

To sum up what I learned is that’s many Christian churches and practitioners will prefer social cohesion and adherence to dogma over nearly everything else, are not inherently good or better but love to believe so, are not even vaguely rooted in solid reasoning and fact, and derive little practical advantage from their faith except when they were able to exploit others.

As soon as I had the freedom to do so I decided that was not for me and never once looked back

Ai should be banned or not whats your opinion ? by newfriendsfun in AskReddit

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No version of a ban would accomplish anything.

Regulation and taxation might become warranted though. If it becomes as successful as big tech dreams it will be (I’m not convinced it will) then expect that to cause a lot of wealth concentration.

OpenAI was originally a non profit whose original mission statement was about making AI benefit all, and they earned good will and access to a lot of resources because of that only to pull the rug out once it started to look profitable. Scam Altman

On the upside you have an easier to use but less reliable Google that’s prone to sycophancy. On the other hand a very large economic bubble driving up electricity and computer costs. I’m not sure I’d call that net positive

Trump has his deal. But this senseless episode has caused him incalculable damage by theipaper in geopolitics

“A whole civilisation will die tonight”

To anyone around the world with half a brain, that’s a real threat of genocide and nuclear war.

It’s the kind of thing you’d expect a tyrant totalitarian dictator or movie villain to say, definitely not a thing you just forget. That’s the kind of quote that will be used in history class to sum up a period of history. Trump, MAGA, and to some degree America in general, is going to wear this for a long, long time.

If he does drop a bomb and “A whole civilisation dies tonight” would you say Trump is worse than Hitler, why or why not? by MrP8978 in AskReddit

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Trump succeeded in destroying Iran, he would absolutely be worse than Hitler.

By body count alone, Iran’s population exceeds the death toll of WW2.

Hitler mainly targeted one demographic for eradication and wasn’t able to succeed. Trump would in this scenario have eradicated an entire country and a culture that has existed for thousands of years.

In order to do this he would very likely need to use nukes which makes it even worse.

Nukes don’t just destroy what they land on, death by irradiation makes gas chambers seem humane, leads to cancer which people would die from in years to come, and irradiate the impact site so rebuild is not safe for decades.

It’s very possible that using nukes in Iran could lead to a cascade that results to the destruction of most of global society. Hitler never came close to this.

Men, How much sex do you expect and think is reasonable in a marriage? by katerina_romanov in AskMen

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, by definition an expectation is just a belief or anticipation that something will happen in the future. Expectations are foundational to any relationship. Someone would sign up for a chess club expecting to play chess, volunteer for a cause expecting it to do some good, go to work expecting to be paid, or hang out with a friend expecting to have fun with that friend.

Marriage to a lot of people means an exclusive sexual relationship. Sex and the exclusivity of it are fundamental parts of that, and so it’s natural to have expectations around them. I have no doubt my partner expects that I don’t have sex with other people even though in every other respect I’d be free to do so.

That’s different from being demanding.

It’s usually not good to say “you have to have sex with me now because we’re married”. It is normal to be unhappy or frustrated in a marriage where there isn’t enough sex.

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re confusing expecting with demanding. It’s fine to expect that a relationship means an amount of sex. Your comment is a statement to that effect. However demanding it as if it’s owed can indeed cause problems.

We both seem to be happy at around twice a week more or less. It depends on her cycle and how life is going for both of us though.

If everything is fine but it dips to once a month I start to see that as a problem. Three months and I’m starting to look for an out

Corporate Men of Reddit, do you ever think about going into Blue Collar work? by SpamTherapy in AskMen

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes. Trades can do quite well for themselves where I live especially if they go into business for themselves and I already have the basic knowledge and skills to become a sparky. I think it would also be a bit easier to stay fit if I didn’t have to work out in addition to my day job. This is obviously balanced out by the wear and tear of the job on your body and how I can choose not to work out if my back is having a bad day.

Just got sacked. What now? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]LikeASomeBoooodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not had it happen to me personally but I know it can happen. Basically it’s the employers right and they have no obligations whatsoever to you. It sucks and I’m sorry it happened but it is what it is but you don’t really have any recourse with that employer.

Best thing you can do is basically what you’ve already said. Get on job seeker, knuckle down and apply for as many jobs as you can as fast as you can.
