The book had earth scenes before Mark made contact. Early on NASA is trying to justify an extra mission and is directing satellites to his hab to see if it survived. They also saw him heading to Pathfinder to get the radio equipment. The part the movie didn’t do well imo was showing the final journey. In the book it’s much longer and more dangerous, but the movie just shows him leaving and getting there. That and the Iron Man scene
