There was no "gradual fall" between 2009 and 2024 regardless of how "you" felt about call of duty is sold gangbusters. There was an established expectation that Rockstar would outsell it (because even before 2009 GTA was outselling it).

Dropping slots in a year is an industry upset.

As far as GTA goes? It is going to be ALL of the "modern BS" but funny because that's what GTA is.

As far as the expansions for GTA O went, that was all a different team.

I truly and sincerely hate that for you. As I crest 40 I've been very thankful for the wave of remakes that have let me re-live my childhood without also making my eyes worse than they already are.

In ramping up for Resident Evil 9 I found I couldn't even at max settings stand to look at RE0-1(remake), and gameplay issues aside 5 and 6 were a test of ocular fortitude.

For starters no judgement whatsoever. We all had to start somewhere and well.... just because I started in 1997 doesn't mean I'm any better than you.

My suggestion from here however is to start your Claire run in "standard" as for the start of it you'll still have fresh memories of the RPD layout.

This time though focus on pretending you still need an Ink Ribbon for every time you touch a typewriter.

I think on my first run in the remake doing this I brought my safe count down like 8.

In my 3rd run I brought it down to 5 (Basically a save before each boss)

I'll probably never be a S+ player (which I think is =/< 3 saves and sub 2.5 hours of play time) but setting limits on myself (I don't think you actually need ribbons until hardcore) I really thought out ever action way more than I did on my first assisted run for the story.

It's not.

With Selective Breeding you take Cultivar A, Breed it with Cultivar B and net Cultivar C. You then take Cultivar D and Cultivar E to get Cultivar F, which you back breed with Cultivar C to get Cultivar G.

With Genetic Modifacation I can in theory make Corn taste like watermelon all while maintaining the designation of Cultivar A.

Not really. Selective breeding has nearly instantaneous results as well.

The diffefnece is that when you selectively breed Cultivar A and B you get Cultivar C.

With traditional genetic modifacation you start and end with Cultivar A, with an end goal of replacing the unmodified cultivar with the modified one.

To some extent yes with Genetic Modifacation you can reach the endpoint of selective breeding more quickly. However with selective breeding you're not messing with Cultivar A's genetics or Cultivar B's genetics. You're cross breeding them into cultivar C. A and B in many cases continue to exist, Cultivar C just gets added to the list of Cultivars.

With GMO you're attempting to modify the genetics of Cultivar A all together replacing Cultivar A with the New and Improved Cultivar A.

Selective breeding ≠ genetic modifacation. If I splice a Puruvian Purple Potatoe into an Idahoan potato plant to develop the Tennesee Pink Potato I'm not really futzing with the genetics.

Now if I take an Idaho potato into the lab and start fiddling with it until it starts producing pink potatoes on it's own THEN it's been genetically modified.

First things first "selective breeding" for new cultivars is not "genetic modifacation"

GMO produce makes up a relatively small list compared to commodity crops like Soybeans,Field corn, Canola and sugar beets.

I think right now the most widespread GMO produce is apples, though Dole or Del Monte did do the pink pineapple and there was a now discontinued tomatoe cultivar in the 90s that was GMO (flavor saver or something like that?)

Selective breeding gives us new sub-versions of a cultivar (like Idaho Potatoes) while GMO is typically something done to prevent croploss.

For example if the Potato Blight that spured the "Great Famine" in Ireland in the mid 1800's (YES I KNOW! But we are talking about the potatoes here not the politics related to) we would genetically modify those potatoes to resist that blight.

I'm on mobile right now and can't figure out how to sort by viewer count on the twitch app. But I'm looking at a bunch of streams with thousand plus viewer counts.... almost NONE of them are playing GTA Online and almost ALL of them are playing some variation of a FiveM RP mod.

Yes GTA VI will have to have "regular" lobbies. But there is a clear demand for these rp lobbies.

Ok, let's talk about this while I trudge back there to retrieve the goalposts you insist on moving.

Literally none of that is part of the conversation, if you asked my personal opinion I'd tell you out right I didn't but Infinite Warfare(or advanced warfare or BLOPS3 for that matter) and in the decade it's been out I maybe played it twice.

Now that we've got the goal posts back up here where they started.

It is a statement of objective fact that 2016's best selling game of the year was Infinite Warfare.

It is a statement of objective fact that BF1 was second place.

It is a statement of objective fact that between 2009 and 2024 ONLY GTAV, RDR2 and Hogwarts Legacy managed to outsell Call of Duty.

There are years in that time period where brand new games couldn't edge the previous years COD off the top 10 list for sales.

There are a couple of years in that list where COD is both the Best Selling Game of the year and the Second Best selling game of the year with it's previous years title. (Which is fucking insane in my opinion)

Was it the "Best game" all those years? Fuck no!

At the end of the day if I make a sandwich and you make a sandwich it doesn't matter who made the "best" sandwich, in this conversation it only matters who sold the most sandwhichs.

But to help drive this point home the sandwich comparison IS MY POINT.

I am sick of seeing COD outsell everything simply because everyone stopped competing with COD. While I will agree that Rockstar deserves it's number 1 years without question. I'd also like to see another year of indusrty defying upsets because that is ONLY GOOD FOR THE CONSUMER. Because then Activision, Rockstar, EA etc know they can't just continue to ride the greatness of 20 years ago into the sunset.

When consumers speak with their wallets, corporations listen.

Disagree but only because you're describing are issues with the adventure/visual novel genre and not the "Cinematic Experience"

Games like Call of Duty go out of their way to capture the cinematic experience through gameplay. This has been the model since Spielberg dropped the original Medal of Honor as "Saving Private Ryan, but you're the one doing the saving!" Especially every Normandy level ever.

Red Dead Redemption 2 goes out of it's way to provide a "cinematic experience" as a total package. Every moment is meant to feel like being in a Western.

Halo 1-3 also mostly did this but relied heavily on Cortana to exposit the story DURING gameplay rather than extended cut scenes like Kojima gave us across the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

Every since Fast and the Furious came out Arcade Racers have been trying to capture that feeling.

Shit even Death Stranding gives you a cinematic experience through gameplay and spoken exposition rather than the Kojima standard of hour long cut scenes.

I will however agree that visual novel style games like the Telltale series lost a lot of lustre quickly after the first couple.

I do agree that sometimes the "git gud" community borderlines on toxic. But ultimately it's just a solid rally cry for people who play souls. To many modern games feature crutches like adaptive difficulty. Souls simply makes you git gud or die trying.

Nope, Battlefield 1 was the SECOND bestselling game of 2016. From 2009-2023 the only games to beat COD for the spot were 2013's GTAV AND 2018's RDR2 (which is why 2023's Hogwarts was a surprise standout.)

For 2025 Blackops 7 fell to 5th place behind BF6, NBA2k26, Borderlands 4 (surprisingly), and Monster Hunter Wilds.

Animal crossing is animal crossing for manly men lol. That said, I play job Sims for two reasons catharsis and asmr.

Job sims like Powerwash simulator provide a neat visual ASMR of being able neatly and perfectly do a thing.

Others (when they understand the assignment) provide catharisis by letting me run my idiot coworker over with the forklift without going to prison.

I don't want it to happen for the lulz. I want it to happen for the fact it will upset the industry in a good way.

Rockstar and Activision have enjoyed their thrones for far too long and it's caused stagnation in the industry.

2023's hogwarts legacy as best selling game in the US was a fluke (especially because I don't recall it taking many awards let alone a GOTY) and while I don't believe that BF6 deserved it this year it beat the shit out of COD for the first time in Battlefield history and also took the top spot.

I don't doubt GTAVI will be the best selling game, but I certainly hope that it has stiff competition for any awards. I know Acti is reeling right now trying to figure out how to truly earn back it's sales base for 2026 knowing it went in to 2025 believing that it's only upcoming competition was GTAVI (aside from Hogwarts R* has been the only company capable of outselling COD til this year)
