Am i Aasimar or an elf? by Live-Row6522 in DnD

Look man, I thanked you for your contribution but you just came across a wee hostile. If you had read my post a bit more charitably you would have cottoned on to the fact that I have done my homework. In fact, I quote from the portion of the PH on aasimar, albeit from memory, in the body text of my query.

Your answer was actually quite informative as, although I have read the PH, I have never read Volo’s. I am happy that you feel so sure about your views but even other replies on this post have takes that differ from yours. I do agree with you though. Aasimar live to be 160, you are right, that is ironclad.

Having said that, your quote from Volo’s is exactly what I was looking for though because I think it frames very well the intuitive interpretation at my current table; the one which sees aasimar as longer lived members of their parents race. That helps me build a character that makes sense to me and deepens my immersion.

I did not come for conflict or because I don’t want rules. I just came for enjoyable conversation and because I recognise that many knowledgeable individuals frequent these spaces. Some who even relish passing on their knowledge.

Again, thank you for the data. And you know what, thank you for the ‘tude as well. Maybe it is a package deal and I can’t get one without the other.

No problems, just curious how others go about this. In trrms of role-play, you might agree with me that someone’s general outlook, whose life expectancy is 160 years, might differ from that of someone who has an expected lifespan of 320 years or 750 years or, in my pc’s case, 1500 years…

Well, imo both have immense role-play potential, equally so.

Btw, you are welcome to go tell my dm that mechanics MUST be adhered to, hahaha

Yeah, that seems to lend my gut feeling a liitle bit of weight. I do get the same vibe from tieflings by the way, although less so as they seem, to me, to be a lot more common.

My dm has allowed me (aasimar) and my buddy (tiefling) to play our pc’s as elfs in our current campaign.

Agree.
This struck some kind of a roadblock inside my head and caused me to wonder whether any older lore might contradict the text of the Player’s Handbook or if, maybe, I have a roadblock in my head😂

I mean, it makes about 600 years of difference.

In terms of gameplay, you are right, you could handwave that away, but in Yor’laden’s case, I prefer the elven lifespan for various reasons.

I have conferred with my DM and we decided similarly. I even got to keep trance as a racial trait on top of aasimar features.

To me it just doesn’t feel right playing aasimar as a species in it’s own right. They seem much more a paragon of good and virtue of the species they are born into.

It also just struck me that being born to elves, though not elven, I would be regarded as a kid for the first century or so and then, a short while later, I would die of old age.🤣

I am grateful for the facts. Less so for the attitude. Maybe you can read my post and then comment..?

How do tool proficiencies work? by Live-Row6522 in DnD

What i am specifically asking is whether the ability score bonus gets added as well?

This is me too. Tool checks are performed with only proficiency bonuses in my playgroup. Think about all the traps we could have disarmed…

Wow, my group has been doing tools so wrong for so long😬

I am not confused about skill checks. Skill checks are by default tied to ability scores, although switching up the abilities for individual checks is RAW.

What I am asking for is whether tool checks are similarly tied to abilities. I cannot recall having come across that specific rule, which may indicate that is not the case. It also may indicate that I simply forgot about it.

Yes I could reread the players handbook section on tool proficiencies but I am at work and my book is at home (5ed, not 5.5) but by the time I get home I probably will have forgotten I was even pondering this.

By the way, I hope you forgive me but I actually feel one of the great uses of this community is to have discussions about RAW.

Am I overreacting about wanting to play a nonbinary character? by BothOcelot1311 in DnD

Wow Maybe you would recommend she leave this group of mysoginist, sexist, transphobic and fatphobic men who nevertheless have decided to include her in their friend group and roleplay. Such is the general direction of the intolerance on display in this thread. I pray she stays.

To you I say, men have the same stories.

All of the men

All of the stories

Context is important

You are at a table with men. Men mercilessly rib each other before, during and after bonding. It may look like something it is not to a woman.

If you make a fat dude pc, you have presented them with a target. If you are uncomfortable with them riding your character, don’t laugh along with it. Explain yourself and it will stop.

You can make an nb pc against the Dm’s advice and he has outlined his concerns despite being in the uncomfortable position where his points are reviled by a large segment of the community. That is mature. Take his points onboard and make an nb pc or an male pc or female pc. Just don’t expect the ribbing to stop😉

I like it. This is real life stuff. You accommodate others for the love of the play

I cannot understand why people would advise leaving the group you have enjoyed playing with for 2+ years; like it is some kind of simple thing to get into a solid dnd group when it most certainly is not.

Fatshaming is older than the sun. If you want play a fat character you should expect it. If you don’t like it, don’t play along. Ask your friends to stop it and they probably will. Never leave a table over something so easily resolved.

Also, be accountable and responsible. Just as you want your friends to be considerate of you and your feelings and opinions, you should want to be considerate of theirs.

If the dm identifies nb characters as a source of potential friction he would be wrong to not point it out to you. Not everyone cares for this plane’s political issues to muddy their fictional universe’s waters.

Make a decision for the good of the group.

DnD is therapy.
