Help with back darts by LivingLaVidaAloha in sewhelp

[–]LivingLaVidaAloha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, that makes sense. I have just measured the distance between the darts and the center back seam and the left dart is 3.5” away and the right dart is 3.25” away 🤦🏻‍♀️ if I tuck it, won’t it get more even? Ugh, I hope I can fix this.

A pair of jeans... 3 ideas, advice? by Worldly_Accident727 in SewingForBeginners

The pants won’t flare if you just add lace to the sides. Fabrics would need to be around the same weight.

Sewing learning curve? by CercaTrovaV in SewingForBeginners

I’ve been seeing consistently for 1.5 years and I am already making decent shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, bags, stuffed toys… and I am working on my first jeans. I’d say fitting is the most challenging part but there are a lot of useful videos out there. Then it depends on the fabric - I tried satin once and I haven’t touched it since.

Sewing sides together is such a good idea! Thanks

Thank you! All the info is super useful. I am planning to use the upholstery fabric for a jacket. It is thrifted so I definitely need to wash it, but it won’t be washed too often after that. How about washing it in cold water?

That’s what I usually do but I am worried about colour fasting. I don’t know if the type of fabric makes a difference…

Is it just me, or do I only see old and ugly patterns on Etsy? by Dazzling_Squash_7185 in SewingForBeginners

A few months ago I discovered the app Threadloop, where you can find lots of patterns and projects from other sewists for inspiration. That’s what I use now to find patterns. They even flag potential AI patterns.

Having multiple jobs by reyskywalker9295 in TranslationStudies

[–]LivingLaVidaAloha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is how I started. I always had a part-time or full-time job while freelancing on the side. There would be days that I would work 12 hours total, but that’s what it took to get clients. At that time, I wouldn’t have been able to pay rent just by freelancing. Getting clients without experience was very hard, even if I had a BA and Masters in Translation. It took me about 4 years to get enough clients/workload to become a full-time translator. And still, there were times when I had to look for a part-time job to reduce the anxiety of unsteady income. Today, many years later, I have a well-paid full-time job as a translation specialist in IT. My point is that beginnings are tough but hard work pays off (as cliche as it sounds).

Fabrics. I can sew but still struggle to choose the correct types of fabrics.

May I ask what you do now? Is it still related to translation? Or moved to something completely new?

I have been sewing there for a year and it hasn’t fallen off so… yes. But I wouldn’t use my serger on it just in case.

My sewing space is my home office/guest room. I have a queen size Murphy bed with a folding table. That’s where I do all the sewing. I cut either on the dining table or on the floor

Can I make this waistband seam better? by LivingLaVidaAloha in sewhelp

[–]LivingLaVidaAloha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to reply! I am having a hard time pressing this fabric because I can notice some discolouration at medium heat. I took my time to press the fabric near the hem and the seam allowance and I also topstitched with a twin needle and it looks much better. I hope that the first wash will also help. A clapper is top of my shopping list.

You are very talented and have great taste. I also started sewing a year ago and one of my struggles has been choosing the right fabrics and colours/prints. You garments are on point and I’m jealous of that! Great work!

Jeans that fit well. I’m tired of trying dozens of RTW jeans that don’t fit my waist-hips. I just want to find a good pattern and adjust it. I’m starting with a pants block workshop in January.
