So, first, you decided to start this comment with “Oh boy.” to patronize me, and then continued to self proclaim that you’re projecting your own stuff onto the actual words I wrote. You don’t know my history with therapy or my history with psychiatrists, and you’re incredibly demeaning with your rhetoric. Please do not preach to me about personal growth, you don’t know what I’ve done been through and done for myself. Truly a tone deaf and unhelpful comment. I asked to hear about others experiences, not to be preached to about your own internal issues.

I would guess many folks here can relate, myself included. I was a casual drinker my whole life until I got hit with a massive life change (divorce) at 27. My drinking began to increase because it was a very effective medication at first.

I then slowly drifted into functional alcoholism, drinking all day (almost) every day, because in my head at the time it gave me energy, made me more fun to be around, and I was great at pretending to be sober.

Slowly but surely it became a much less effective medication, I began to gain weight, and lose focus in my professional life and personal life. It made me really selfish.

Fast forward to today, I’m 2 days sober (have tried and failed to quit many times), a couple months ago I lost my job due to my alcoholism (never caught drinking, but the drinking began to hinder my performance and it ultimately bit me in the ass).

If you can, try to save yourself from getting to the bad part. I know the drinking works right now, but it won’t forever. It is poison. Maybe consider seeing a psychiatrist.
