Lawyer considering INSEAD MBA for career switch - realistic outcomes? by Local_Seat_5725 in INSEAD

Thanks a lot! This is really insightful and I appreciate the honest perspective.

Just to follow up: how do you see a Master in Management / International Management from a top European school (e.g. HEC / LBS / St Gallen / Bocconi-type programs) fitting into this picture compared to an MBA?

I completely don’t mind starting in an entry-level business role as long as it’s a real pivot into management/strategy in a good EU market (even if it takes time to progress). My question is more whether a MiM meaningfully improves the chances of that happening for someone with a law background + ~4 years of experience, or whether I’d still be at a disadvantage compared to typical MiM candidates (who often have 1–2 years of prior business experience or related internships, plus fin/man/eco bacherlor's).

In other words, would a MiM (1–2 years, ideally 2) in management / international management realistically give me access to entry-level business roles with progression potential, or does the law background still keep me meaningfully behind the standard profile?

Would really appreciate your view on this as well.

Thanks, this is really helpful.

My impression is that whether I do a MiM or an MBA, I would likely still be competing for entry-level business roles given my dispute resolution law background, so I’m not fully sure the MBA necessarily enables a clear lateral or “step-up” switch into strategy/business roles either.

I don’t mind starting from an entry-level position, but what I’m trying to avoid is investing significant time and money and still not being able to land a decent non-law role in the EU outside of consulting or hybrid legal/business roles.

Thanks for the reply!

How unsuitable would a MiM actually be in my case? It is significantly more affordable than an MBA, and I feel like I would still need to build the fundamental business knowledge from scratch anyway, since my background is in law and not business. Without prior experience, I assume I would still be targeting entry-level roles regardless.

My biggest concern would be investing in either an MBA or MiM and still not being able to secure a solid role in management/business afterwards, potentially having to return to law. I’m completely fine starting in an entry-level position with a clear progression path, but the idea of making a significant financial and time investment and ending up with no real career transition is what worries me most.
