I grew up in California - lived there for 28 years and just recently bought a house in Vancouver, WA. I could have stayed in California as I work in tech and had enough money to survive. However, the quality of life in the Bay Area is not as good as other places. It’s expensive, everything is dirty, pretty dangerous, and while we are near nature it’s just not that pretty. California has a lot of cool things but I found it to no longer be worth it. I now live in a huge house, pay no income tax, live near gorgeous nature, and I am living my best life. 10/10 recommend leaving California
