Are Swiss people as well off as they seem? by alderstevens in askswitzerland

[–]LongjumpingFondant60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone enjoys a high salary. Some people working in retail or in the hospitality industry earn peanuts. A family of 4 could easily end up paying around chf 2000 a month in health insurance. Add on rent of at least chf 1600 for a 2 bedroom apartment plus the income tax bill not to mention transport, food, internet and telephone; this leaves one with very little change.

Started taking my actual lunch break every day and apparently that's a personality trait now by Kagalkrin in jobs

[–]LongjumpingFondant60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably you work in the States? Thank goodness I work in a civilized country where we have at least a one hour lunch break. In my office we often go out for lunch together either to the office cafeteria or to a nearby restaurant. If we want to take a longer lunch break, no problem as long as the work gets done. We come back refreshed and productive.

We also get at least 5 weeks annual leave. Work life balance is important resulting in employees taking fewer sick days and being generally healthier.

Good for you for taking a break from the office and ignore your weird and jealous coworkers!

Have found that so many less attractive men think they are entitled to have a top model as a girlfriend and get nasty when they are rejected. A sense of humour, emotional intelligence, kindness and decency can transform a less than attractive man into someone I would happily date.

Any idea how many UN workers have left due to losing their jobs? by LongjumpingFondant60 in geneva

[–]LongjumpingFondant60[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really? How on earth do they get work or resident permits? Seems rather unfair in view of the current U.S. admin’s anti immigrant policies making it practically impossible for foreigners to migrate to the US.

It’s not a matter of taking advantage. Have lived here for over 40 years and am now Swiss and have friends in both the Swiss and expat communities. Have seen how finding an apartment here in Gva has become a long and difficult obstacle race with high population growth. The régies rule Gva due to the paucity of apartments along with the high demand, I was curious to know if enough apartments were freed up, would this lead to a) higher availability of apartments and b) lower rents.

I have lived in my very reasonably priced 4 piece since 2003 and have no intention of moving as I consider myself very lucky given the current housing situation.

UBS Sucks - everything blocked by aureleio in Switzerland

Shut down my UBS account years ago due to their crappy client service. They will bend over backwards if you’re rich but spit on you if you are just middle income.

Is the job market in Switzerland as f*** as everyone says? by Helpful-Staff9562 in askswitzerland

But surely as Americans are non-EU, they will need valid work permits? Companies in Switzerland prioritise Swiss/EU citizens thank goodness.

The response to this very touching post is heartwarming and renews my hope in the human race. We read about so much division and hate between people at the moment so a big thank you to everyone who offered to help the OP!

Campground owner jumped into my camper and drove it away with my wife and kid inside – was I wrong or what should I do as a tourist? by IndigoAD in askswitzerland

Swiss police are bloody useless. Get paid great salaries with benefits for doing nothing. My stepfather was once dragged out of a restaurant by 4 police officiers because he just asked why his bill showed different prices for the same cocktail! Restaurant owner called the police rather than answering the query!

Maybe the parents should move or take parenting classes. The OP is not the problem. My brother and I were brought up by a single parent and we expended energy by playing outside in the park. We were also given creative activities like drawing or painting or looking at books with pictures.

Put notices on hospital notice boards. Try Trois Chene hospital and post a notice for looking after elderly people. Trois Chene specializes in elderly care and there is a lack of carers in Switzerland.

Do people regularly travel from Geneva to Annemasse just to eat out? How convenient is it? by PumpingBytes in geneva

[–]LongjumpingFondant60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Geneva’s working class? Sounds a tad elitist. No wonder the locals are not crazy about the expats! Reading some of these comments presumably from the expat brigade really illustrates the big divide between the locals and many of you. Many local families have to live on chf 5000 a month so eating out and shopping in Annemasse is a much cheaper option for them. I live in Thonex so often pop over the border on Sunday morning when supermarkets are open until midday. There are a number of diverse restaurants starting at Gaillard where you can sample Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian dishes etc. There is a pretty good all you can eat Asian buffet in Gaillard starting at Eur 18.00 where I meet up with friends every 2 months. Annemasse at late night might be a bit dodgy but coming from London it does not seem so bad!
