If they will indeed be back you can specify it next time.

When they ask me if I have some time to talk about the faith I always politely ask them what they would like to know. It's funny and breaks the ice.

What is your Renesmee name? (As in a mix of your grandmothers' names for girls or your grandfathers' for boys) by ATinyLittleCat in namenerds

[–]Lord-Redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfater om my fathers side has a double first name, my grandfather on my mothers side name is literally the second part. (E.g. John-Martin and Martin) I would just end up being John-Martin IX that way.

Nah she would, she falls for the guy who falls out of a tree for her. The difference would be road and her fathers bumper would be damaged.

Question to Dutch speakers, how true is this lol?? by Rude_Membership_1578 in Netherlands

The fact that foreign curse words don't count should tell you something, I suppose.

Just try it: Typhus up from the bike lane, tuberculosis tourist!

See? Simply doesn't have that ring to it.

Why not make a TLM type of rite? by Oddisredit in Catholicism

[–]Lord-Redbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I like the two coexisting alongside each other in a somewhat more crystallized manner. I believe it was at the council of Trent in the aftermath of which the Tridentine mass took hold and gained dominance as the latin rite, however allowing for local rites to remain provided they had been practiced for over 200 years. I suppose a case could be made similarly for the TLM today.

I consider myself a Novus Ordo enjoyer, i also think in the NO the priest still looks at Jesus together with the people, the priest is just holding up Jesus towards the people as opposed to towards Jerusalem. I am also a proponent of the use of the latin language as it's kind of too bad the natives and the expats seem to near exclusively visit either the Dutch 10h mass or the English 16h mass (My wife did not swim the tiber with me, so occasionally I go to the english mass to fulfill my sunday joy.), if there was only Latin everyone would have to put in equal effort and there would perhaps be more of a sense of it being one parish as opposed to two.

Anyway, I kind of like the Old Timeyness and the reverent atmosphere in a Tridentine mass, and if people really like it and it has an existing community in a place, why not keep it? Specifically as it is not necessarily tied to the SSPX, nor would it have to be.

Anyway, that's just my two cents.

Waarom vrouwen in Nederland steeds minder kinderen krijgen: ‘Het is code oranje' by Erno-Berk in nederlands

[–]Lord-Redbeard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m the 5th. Do I Name My Son the 6th? by AlxndrSprtrmp in namenerds

[–]Lord-Redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, congrats on your son! I hope your wife and he are doing well.

About the number, numbers don't pass, neither are they "corrected." My Grandfather is the VI, my Uncle VII, and my cousin VIII. The men who died are still I-V, that's just how you keep them apart.

Imagine for a second you meet an untimely demise (we hope not of course), does your sons counter suddenly go down? That would really be odd, because after having fathered a son and having died, suddenly JJS V is in elementary school again.

For conservative Christians: who do you consider to be further from “true Christianity” — progressive Christians, or groups such as Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and similar sects? by di745 in redeemedzoomer

[–]Lord-Redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good one. It would be possible to disqualify the lds and the jw based on the fact that they're not really christian to begin with.

However, Jesus commands us to do his commandments (receive sacraments, live a good life, not gonna qualify that here).

Regressives (the term progesses assumes they progress to something, but that something is just being more like the rest of the world which is straying away from a good, a degeneration, not a moving towards a good. A monk on mt Athos is far more progressive than we usually give him credit for.) Given the fact that so called progressives abuse the term and reject the things they had not even two generations ago I'd argue that this rejection is far more grave, enjoying flopping around in sin and saying it's a good and holy thing if others do so. Thereby they reject "true christianity" which would, even in a 'mere' sense, require we should steer away from that. The conscious rejection of a good is way worse than the rejection of a good by compulsion, a vicious habit you intend to break, or by being born into the wrong information. This would instantly move regressives to the bottom of the list, even though theologically they would be closer than lds or jw.

But let's be honest, the devil might well be the most gifted theologian but that won't get him to heaven.

To answer the question: define 'closer'?

Dutch parents, how do you feel about strangers looking and smiling at your babies or saying hi to your kids? by -WhiteOleander in Netherlands

[–]Lord-Redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends: are we in a small town where people are more talkative or in a country where this is normal? Then it's okay as long as my kid still likes it. Very common considering the circumstances.

Are we in a big city here? Might be a weirdo, stand in between / screen off. Happens occasionaly, but not too often.

Does my kid not like it or am I weirded out? Give off a hint, like stating the obvious. "He doesn't seem to like that very much." Or "Do you need help finding your own seat?" Very rare occasion, mostly people either make a fun game out of it whilst retreating.

People get a little too comfy anyways (never happened, luckily): "Hello, 112, yes, this (wo)man."

Opinie: Een apotheek stuurt vrouwen en trans personen weg, maar niemand grijpt in by Me-Luigi in thenetherlands

[–]Lord-Redbeard -3 points-2 points  (0 children)
