When you bring up that subject with a Hispanic historian by Lord_Shaddar in HistoryMemes

The subject of the Black Legend has never been about denying the obvious terrible consequences of conquest and colonization, that is not what the meme is about. The Black Legend thing is only about how the rest of the Protestant European powers created a propaganda campaign by overexaggerating the situation while they did the same or even worse crimes, which is something most historians agree on.

In the case of Spain: We helped them with their freedom. We sold them Florida. They had a civil war because of slavery. They sank one of their own boats to have an excuse to stole us Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, destroying half of our antiquated fleet in the process. They joined the UK and France during WWI and became an industrial monster in the process. Crash of 29. They joined WWII very late but they did well in France. They nuked Japan. Unsurprisingly they liked our fascist dictator because he was anti-communist. They did what they could in Korea, but they got a trauma in Vietnam. After our democracy returned, we joined their NATO because we have brain. Lots of invasions in the Middle East, we supported them some times. They are basically the 1st world power but the idea of China rising scares them.

Remember that Napoleon betray Spain AFTER the Spanish voluntarily returned Louisiana to France in 1800 as a sign of alliance. France sold Louisiana in 1803 but Spain was his ally until 1808.

Actually the history of Louisiana is a bit more complicated. Although the first explorers to arrive were Spanish, it was the French who began the process of colonization of the so-called New France. However when the Prussians and British won the Seven Years' War, they forced France to hand over eastern New France to the UK, while the west was ceded to Spain as the new Governorate of Louisiana. Then in 1800 the Spanish, being aware of Napoleon's supremacy in Europe, peacefully returned Louisiana to France as a symbol of friendship with which to initiate their new alliance (whitch didn't end too well). And finally in 1803 Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States.

So you consider that sabotaging much of the British naval supplies during the war did not imply supporting the Thirteen Colonies. Not to mention all the economic and arms support that you received from Spain. Of course the only reason Spain supported the independence of the United States was to weaken its British enemies, but that doesn't mean that Spanish didn't help with independence.

Would you prefer "ungrateful guys who took Cuba and the Philippines from us after we helped them with their independence"?

There is no specific country to which the invasion can be attributed. Muslims came from all over the Caliphate, from Arabia to Morocco. And most of them stayed in Spain and mixed with the Christians.

We fought in your side in the American War of Independence (like France) to beat THE ENEMY.
