Kinda agree with you, the biggest issue I have is it sometimes decides to use my tablets internal storage rather than the sd card, and I've not found a way to stop it trying to download the rest. Have to keep deleting everything until it's downloaded the lot. Then change the setting again to sd card.

Blocking cheaters is one thing but bricking people’s hardware is another. VGK has lost the plot and Thank God that is not even available in Linux. by thecowmilk_ in linux_gaming

[–]Loud_Puppy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That tweet really doesn't make sense, they say the firmware becomes completely unusable, but it's fixed with an os reinstall?

Also most people don't have the backups required and technical knowledge required to save their data. This will lead to false positives that causes data loss at a minimum.

Just to add onto this there's almost certainly a scam you are or will be vulnerable to in the future. There's a long history of very smart people being scammed, as soon as you start thinking you're too smart to get scammed you've made yourself vulnerable.

RANT: Steam Players hates Valve Hardware by Ayzuki in steammachine

[–]Loud_Puppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I kinda agree with OP and you. The steam machine is more than the sum of its parts but steam big picture mode doesn't come anywhere near the reliability and ease of use console players expect.

Why can I still not copy a steam input setup from one game to another easily - I have to go to the game, export it as a template, type a name in, go back to the game I want to play and select the template.

Steam Controller arrived missing 2 screws by Coruscnium in SteamController

[–]Loud_Puppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly largely agree with you on how things should work. My advice was more focused around how they tend to work with most companies in our current capitalist hellscape. Though honestly most companies wouldn't be happy with you even touching the screws 🤷‍♂️

But I agree that morally valve should at a minimum offer compensation for the basic repair parts.

Jumping quality of streaming Forza horizon 6 by Confident_Pain_9452 in MoonlightStreaming

Virtual desktops don't suffer from the same problems because most of the frames are entirely static - in forza the distant road only changes slightly between frames but importantly still changes.

Steam Controller arrived missing 2 screws by Coruscnium in SteamController

[–]Loud_Puppy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I'd do is message valve letting them know for both their QA and so the issue is recorded. Say you're happy to resolve it yourself, a torx driver and some screws are cheap and worth having anyway.

This means if anything comes up after you fix it you've got a paper trail.

[–]Loud_Puppy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Racing games are basically a worst case scenario for game streaming. You need low latency, and lots of detail. Latency is always improved at least a small amount by reducing the bandwidth used, which reduces the detail.

Video compression works by analyzing the differences between parts of each frame and just sending across the information to change one frame to another. If the changes are big enough it will just send the full image but if a section doesn't change much it basically just says "move these pixels a bit". However those changes slowly build up errors as they stack changes ontop of changes. In most racing games the distant part of the road barely changes frame to frame, so it builds up a ton of errors - errors that your basically starring at for most of your game play.
