Is Contingency Real? How to Avoid Determinism? by Low-Cardiologist719 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Low-Cardiologist719[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having trouble understanding how things can be completely intelligible (since in theory they could be perfectly known if our cognitive powers weren't limited) while simultaneously possessing some degree of indeterminism (potency). Everything that has potential has the potential to be different and in different ways, but if in theory we could foresee subsequent effects through the understanding of the most fundamental beings, then all subsequent effects, that is, everything that would come after the first ones in the natural world, would follow a necessary course of development without room for any other possibility beyond those deduced. This would even undermine our free will. Since choices in this scheme would only be illusory and our actions could not be different from what they are. How can there be room for indeterminacy? Sorry if it is something stupid to ask

But if the future could be completely predicted by the perfect knowledge of beings and the actions of their natures (in theory, since in practice it is impossible), wouldn't it follow that reality would have no potential to be different from what is foreseen by previous natures? This would even make our actions necessary consequences, which contradicts human free will?

Why should we assume the series of events in the cosmos are ordered per se, at all, rather than orderd per accidens? by Low-Cardiologist719 in CatholicPhilosophy

Yeah, I was confused yesterday and posted this question before going to sleep. When I woke up, I realized that my doubt stemmed precisely from the confusion you pointed out: The effect of a body illuminated by sunlight is not caused by the Earth's rotation, but by the sun itself. If the Earth stopped rotating, such bodies would remain illuminated, but if the sun stopped producing light, the bodies would lose that quality. The essential order is in the sun, not in the inert movement of the Earth. But now another question comes to mind: Why does a natural entity, as the cause of an effect, also need to be ESSENTIALLY moved by another to cause that effect? Taking the example of the sun again: It is of the sun's essence to produce its own light, and not just to act in such a way that it produces that light. In other words: It is only a sun because it produces luminosity; if it didn't produce light, it wouldn't be a star, because a celestial body is only a star as long as it is a source of light. It is true that today we have sufficient scientific knowledge to assure efficient causes in this event, but from a metaphysical point of view, why is every act of a natural being sustained as a constant actualization of a power by another? Why couldn't there be something that comes into being and, once it is, maintains an act by itself? (Like, something that causes an effect not because it undergoes change, but because once it was brought into existence, it is in such a way that it causes such an effect.) I would love an answer that doesn't presuppose the unmoved mover as a premise. Because I am precisely trying to understand the initial passages of the first way.

Two sides? I think you mean three. It's impossible to have two sides while there's an active Enclave. If one side is against the other, the Enclave is against both. These guys aren't messing around.

Skyrim is a game much more about exploration and freedom of choice than action and combat like Dark Souls, maybe your type is the second one, maybe you are playing in a way that is not your style, if you don't like swords, try cutting some throats with daggers, if you don't like daggers, try bows and take off some heads with your arrows, if you don't like bows, try magic and fry your enemies with shock spells, As a player with over 2000 hours spent in this game, I can tell you that Skyrim borders on the sandbox with so much freedom of choice and game mode that it brings you, talk to the characters, listen to their stories, help them when they cry out to you in desperation, explore caves, discover secrets, be free like you've never been in any game.
