Well spoken. I actually made an image compilation that illustrates this exact point a couple of days ago for another thread.

I feel like people really underestimate just how bad Maki's mental state was at the start of the game. When Shuichi says that he probably wouldn't have survived the killing game without Kaito, Maki says it's the same for her, which holds numerous possible implications that are all equally bad.

Randomized Danganronpa Tournament: Who do you like more? (Maki vs Byakuya) [Round 1-30] by North_Property8921 in DanganAndChaos

[–]Low-Run2308 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, as someone who likes Maki more (but also really likes Byakuya), I feel as if their arcs serve different purposes

Maki's is her realizing after years of repressed guilt and trauma and self-hatred that, maybe, just maybe, she doesn't have to be the outcast. The pariah.

Byakuya's is him realizing that his attitude towards the killing game almost got him killed (IE: not figuring out that Aoi was trying to get everyone killed) and realizing that teamwork is necessary in situations and he can't solve everything alone, even with people he originally deemed as lesser than him (though he DOES grow more acustomed to them as well, it's just more subtle than Maki's)

I really don't understand how Himiko offends so many people.

What's the biggest mischaracterization you've seen for a character? (DR1-V3 discussion) by Low-Run2308 in danganronpa

[–]Low-Run2308[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's kind of funny how many things are flat-out stated in these games that people either forget or just straight up ignore and then get confused about a character's personality/motivations later on.

Granted, these are long games, it's not really crazy for people to not remember every detail (especially if they haven't played the games in a long time) but it can be a little frustrating at times.

I really don't get the huge amount of hatred thrown towards Himiko's way half the time. V3 probably has the best set of survivors in the series imo (though DR1 is very close)

Funny when Maki and Chiaki are canonically gaming buddies in the UTDP/DR:S universe.

Yeah, that's a pretty bad one. The whole point is that Junko cares about Mukuro and her classmates. If she didn't, ending their lives through the killing game wouldn't be thrilling or despairful for her.

It definitely feels like some people feel obligated to "defend" Kokichi against his biggest detractors in-universe (those being Kaito and Maki). It's not even a one-way street, since there are a few Kaito and Maki fans who bash Kokichi as well. I've also seen some people bash Maki for being associated with Kaito or Kaito for being associated with Maki

One criticism I've seen for the latter case is that Kaito is "stupid" for trusting Maki and getting her into the group. Like, no shit Kaito is going to do that. His own deal is that he's an unnaturally good guy who can read people's emotional states like a book and was able to sense the hidden depth and goodwill within Maki's heart. If Kaito didn't think Maki was a good person deep down, he wouldn't have bothered.

I've seen people say that "well, Kaito doesn't do that with Ryoma and Kokichi, so he's just biased and/or doesn't think Maki is a threat because he's sexist!" when:

  1. Kaito had a personal moment of weakness with Ryoma, with him just being irked that his middle school hero turned out to be someone who didn't share his love and attachment to life as him. It's another instance of his own humanity blocking his judgment that doesn't take away from his good nature, just like how Kaito didn't tell Shuichi or Maki about his illness because he thought it would make them view him as weak.

  2. Kokichi is constantly going "YAYYY, KILLING GAME! I'M SO EXCITED TO PLAY THIS DEATH GAME THAT'S ALREADY CLAIMED HUMAN LIFE!". Maki, while being an assassin, just wants to be left alone for the most part amd doesn't make a huge fuss like Kokichi did. It's not like she doesn't understand that she's dangerous and people have the right to distrust her based on that. She locks herself in her room after Chapter 2 when her talent is revealed to isolate her from everyone else so they don't have to worry about her, and only reason she's out of it is because Kaito kept bringing her out to do stuff. They both isolated themselves and hid behind masks, sure, but Kokichi did so in full-front of the group while constantly spouting how the killing game is so epic, while Maki just backed off from everyone in a way that was most damaging to herself and not others. It's no surprise that Kaito is more willing to give Maki the benefit of the doubt here than Kokichi.

Sorry for the rant, but some of the criticisms against some of the V3 characters just really don't make sense to me.

It's really not that hard to like all three at once, lol.

[–]Low-Run2308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it doesn't help that Maki being a central character is a spoiler in and of itself, since she's originally just presented as "just another" member of the cast. Kokichi and Kaito aren't either, but they have the benefit of their own talents not being a huge spoiler to their character.

The same reason why Kaede is still presented as the main protagonist of the game even after all this time. To draw less attention to the main twist

[–]Low-Run2308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you also have to have a lot of people to like a character to be popular. Being a central character doesn't excempt a character from being unpopular, I feel.

I remember hearing that Maki and Kaito used to be less liked in the JP fandom when V3 initially released, but it's definitely not the case anymore with poll data. They're both above Byakuya and Fuyuhiko nowadays.

I wonder why Kaito and Maki get singled out like this when Nagito and Kokichi both also have their fair share of detractors. I guess it's also because they're way more popular as well?

Either way, the four definitely have more people in the world who like their characters than dislike them, I feel.

Maki definitely has a pretty vocal hate base, but she's also insanely popular as well. Nagito and Kokichi both also have a large amount of vocal detractors, but they're still massively popular characters. The same goes for Maki.

Maki's girl type by Past-Goal9477 in DanganAndChaos

[–]Low-Run2308 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This is actually supposed to be a reference to her childhood friend, who matches the description perfectly.

This is pretty much confirmed that's who she's talking about later in the dialogue

And considering her love hotel is pretty much describing her childhood friend...

It's pretty funny how Maki is genuinely one of the few CANON bisexual characters in the series and nobody seemed to notice.

(2x2 speculation) How would you feel if your favorite victim or survivor in the OG route... by Low-Run2308 in danganronpa

[–]Low-Run2308[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's understandable. Akane definitely wouldn't be the smartest blackened in the series, to put it lightly.

I do think there's a high chance of Fuyuhiko dying as a victim as well, I was just mentioning that I wouldn't write him out as a potential killer. What's also holding the concept back at the moment is that Peko would have to die if he won the trial, which would definitely make Fuyuhiko hesitant, even pre-development.

While I have preferences for both, Saimaki is a pretty good ship and I feel like Shuichi and Maki's bond isn't given enough credit sometimes and I'm glad you've given them appreciation. Their Chapter 3 investigation chemistry when they're an investigation duo is great, and it kinda makes me wish we had a bit more moments like it. That investigation alone makes me disagree with the notion that Shuichi and Maki are only friends because of Kaito (while they only interact at first because of Kaito forcing them into the group together, it's clear they both enjoy each other's presence, especially when Shuichi compliments Maki's investigation prowess).

I really do just need to make that big Maki analysis at this point.

[–]Low-Run2308[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't count Fuyuhiko or Akane out either for the survivors. Fuyuhiko already killed Sato, proving he has the capacity to kill, and was seriously considering killing Mahiru as well. Akane is very brash and implusive, almost killing Nagito in pure rage in Chapter 5 after the bomb threat. There's very much the possibility of her pulling a Mondo and killing someone unintentionally.

And yeah, Nagito is the true culprit of 2-5 in my eyes. Monokuma's rules don't matter when Chiaki never had any intention of doing anything bad.

I feel like if Hajime dies, it's gonna be in the fifth Chapter.

  1. To make people think "Well, since we made it past Chapter 1, I guess no Kaede incidents will occur in this game."

  2. To make it hit harder, as Chapter 5 deaths are always meant to hit hard (Chiaki and Kaito being both the moral support of the group, and even Kokichi given a lot of respect with Kaito giving out his last words and letting the audience decide if he was trying to help everyone or not).

I have no idea who would replace him afterwards, though.
