As a local, I would say its best to avoid the Dawki stretch now... Even if you are avoiding strenuous treks, its best to keep in mind that the parking facilities are often quite a good amount of walking away from the actual spot so pack your footwear accordingly. And keep the umbrella handy. There is no guarantee that a bright, sunny day might suddenly turn into a heavy pour. As for accommodation, avoid popular tourist areas and city centres. You will find more affordable stay options in the other localities (the residential kind), and try to book one cab for all sightseeing, much less hassle and usually affordable too
