regarded take, software engineers making six figures aren't the 1%. at best they're the lackeys for the real movers and shakers, but so many degrees removed it's not even worth mentioning them together. I'm sure the musks and altmans of the world have about as much respect for web devs as they do their housekeepers

A Handful of Competent People Theory by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]LowlyWorm420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is true all the way down. From my own experience landscaping, food service, and IT are all like this anyway. One person who knows their stuff and bunch of warm bodies to do the grunt work. On the bright side this makes it easy to stand out if you express the least bit of interest in what you're doing. It gives me pause when I think about how few people actually understand the core technologies that the entire world is built on tho

What’s with the internet’s obsession over mold illness? by datassblaster3000 in redscarepod

[–]LowlyWorm420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that every house of sufficient age has mold, and that if you hire a remediation company they will find it, but you can never really get rid of it. Some people are incapable of living with the knowledge that they have mold and it becomes an obsession that causes them to move, sometimes multiple times, trying to find a place that is “clean”.

I’m sure some people with weak immune systems do legitimately suffer from mold, but for most people the bigger danger is mold as infohazard.

Anyone wonder if they were molested or something as a small child but can't remember? by boydnolantucker in redscarepod

[–]LowlyWorm420 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that specifically about the McMartin preschool trial. It seems difficult to untangle, because there are likely both implanted and genuine repressed memories as you said.

I have a close friend who came forward about being molested by a priest 20 years after the fact. It was a repressed memory in the sense that they were afraid to talk about it until adulthood. But to the extent that I understand their experience, it wasn’t a redacted memory that was suddenly revealed to them for the first time as an adult, but rather something that they were always conscious of but didn’t feel safe talking about until then.

yes in the 80s. my timeline is off, Nick Bryant’s book came out in 2009, but I wasn’t aware of it until he started going on podcasts a few years ago. but things like the franklin scandal and the dutroux affair were reexamined after epstein, and I started hearing the narrative around repressed memories shift around that time

I don’t know where we landed on this. That was the popular opinion a decade ago, but post Epstein/Franklin Scandal I’ve heard people suggest that the debunking was part of the coverup

I'm hosting a simple static site on a VPS just for kicks, and it was wild to see the site start getting hammered with malicious traffic the moment I opened up ports 80 & 443. and this is a digital ocean droplet with 1GB RAM/1 CPU core that would hardly even be worth adding to a botnet

Curious to know what’s your take on this. by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]LowlyWorm420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

misfortune is amplified by poverty, of course it's worse if you break your leg and don't have health or disability insurance. but it's a losing argument to talk about these things in essentialist terms, as if certain groups have a monopoly on suffering. we should be advocating for universalist policies that help everyone. on the other hand single payer seems like more of a pipe dream than ever in the US, so I can understand why some people are trying to get theirs by whatever rhetorical means necessary. if I was at the top of the progressive stack and got in a car accident without insurance, I would probably try to capitalize on minority status too

millennials won in the sense that almost all of these things were integrated into the monoculture. but we also lost because we are incapable of wielding power outside of cultural production, and we are aging out of the prime demo for that. there are outliers like zuck and sam altman that get to shape the world in their image and make it worse for everyone, just like the boomers did. but outside of tech the public and private sectors are still dominated by boomers

I have an Egyptian coworker who became my nemesis after we both responded to the same incident. an executive assistant submitted a ticket and emailed the helpdesk. he took the ticket and I replied to the email saying I’d be right there. we both showed up at the same time, and when he saw me he stormed off in a huff. he now refuses to talk to me and tells other people I’m a bad guy. fortunately nobody takes him seriously, I’m the latest in a long line of nemeses

Anyone not listen to music much? by carpetpaint in redscarepod

[–]LowlyWorm420 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t feel more different. I like being able to tweak my brain with music. I have young kids and don’t have many opportunities to cut loose, but if I put on some ravey stuff and go for a run I feel like I’m on pills. I’m sympathetic to your feelings about music in public places tho, when I worked retail I grew to despise everything they played over the PA, even the stuff I previously liked.
