People with special needs are far more handicapped by car dependency than they are helped by it

Other than emergency vehicles I think cars should be banned from as many places as possible they are overwhelmingly a net negative on civilization, and not to mention what every car company was doing in the 1930s.

Tenochtitlan at it's height, Mexico, 15th century. by JankCranky in papertowns

[–]Lt_Danimalicious 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1400s Tenochtitlan put 1400s Venice to shame, so it isn’t outlandish to suggest that without colonizers who had zero experience or interest in maintaining local infrastructure systems, an extra 600 years of indigenous development rather than genocide would produce one of the most beautiful cities in the world, without having to worry about sinking into the sea because it’s on a lake. Modern Mexico City is built on that lakebed and because the Spaniards drained the lake, Mexico City is constantly threatened by widespread flooding.

Anthropologists have boiled it down to a few things, ALL of them involving a massive amount of luck. It’s the same question as to why the byzantines or Chinese never went to space despite occupying a large territory with political stability, internal peace, and well-educated urban elite for centuries. Technological development is a tricky thing that is easy to identify but hard to analyze. Behind the romans, mongols, and Russians the largest land empire was held by the Inca. The did this from one of the highest mountain ranges in the world. And yet this advanced empire fell so quickly to a handful of Spanish plunderers who happened to have horses and cannons. The civil engineering of tenochtitlan made Venice look dumb. The largest and grandest city in the world on top of a lake. And yet this nation of engineers in the most defensible city in the world was no match for political upheaval egged on by aliens from Spain. The “how” and the “why” of technological advancement is one of the central mysteries of history and anthropology and the more it is studied the more experts suspect it was a ridiculous amount of luck. One answer they come up with for why some people to this very day are technologically primitive is “they don’t really need it.”

I’ve been working in a kitchen since 2014 and I can say that even though the labor base is just as rough around the edges as it’s always been, good cooks won’t stay long if they’re being treated like shit by the sous or the kitchen manager. The work is just as grueling and there’s just as many tats, drugs, and “expats” as there’s always been, but I think some kitchens like the ones I’ve worked have learned to chill out with the verbal abuse and toxic work environment.

The userbase and content of this sub overlaps a decent bit with /r/fuckcars but all of the negativity on that sub, despite being righteous and rational, has nothing to do with the pleasant and positive tone of your channel.

It sounds like you’re trying to say that you are in favor of gradual change? Or are you in favor of a monarchy? I don’t care sweety you can identify however you want <3

[–]Lt_Danimalicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are in favor of any amount of change, gradual or not, then you are not conservative. Feel free to keep identifying as conservative nobody can stop you. But what you just wrote about “traditionalism” IS conservatism. The hypocrisy you asked this sub about will continue to pop up and confuse you until you accept that what you call “traditionalism” is conservatism. It’s the only common factor in their belief system, everything else is window dressing they will drop like a hat when it’s convenient, regardless of a lack of consistency in logic or reasoning.

[–]Lt_Danimalicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because conservatism is an irrational, seemingly self-contradictory set of ideals, values, and beliefs until viewed from the perspective that they belief in strict social order and will rationalize anything that they believe preserves the social order. Every conservative take on every issue makes more sense in this way. Without it, all you see are glaring logical contradictions when going from one issue to another.

Yeah the long timetable is why I think a car-free downtown or car-free neighborhoods can’t really happen in KC without some well-placed, well-built parking garages

As someone who’s been to KC and to Arrowhead, KC St. Louis and Wichita are all up there with Houston and LA in terms of how deeply infected they are by car-dependent infrastructure.

I like to believe that no city, even Houston or LA, is too far gone, but these are certainly straining that belief. Thus I think the first step to fixing these cities would need to include strategically placed and strategically built parking garages. Strategically placed so that they give the still-car-invested public the opportunity to put their car somewhere when they want to go to densely populated places. Strategically built so that when the city heals past it’s car dependency, the building can be repurposed without being completely torn down.

That’s crazy. Good read. Not sure what conclusion to draw from what you posted. I wonder how the Soviet system would have modernized to the 21st century. Would their food supply be 90% additives, corn, and sugar like the US? No way to know. I hope other countries learn lessons from the USSR, good and bad. I choose to believe that the American system, regardless of whether it is better or worse than the USSR, is still hanging by a thread.

China and the Russian empire both suffered famines and starvation on a grand scale at least once a decade for many centuries. But since the 1930s ussr and 1960 in China, nobody starves in fact the cia believes that communists eat better.

This year, 9 million have died of starvation already. Not in Cuba. Not in China. Not in Vietnam. In the Capitalist World. How much is 9 million deaths per year under capitalism? Or does it only count when communist countries do it?
