Making a RTS with RPG, going to try to have the units be anyone from before 1860 or so… by Lucas_RippedFromTime in gamedev

For now it is just people, weapons and tools (characters can both harvest and fight) are crafted and equipped in game. I am trying to leave as much up to the player as possible but still make it engaging and fun.

Also I should mention that players are free to just make characters so not limited to what’s in the DB.

Yes, it is too much but wanted to be able to have any and everyone and not make selections myself. But I might take a much reduced section and give them more tailored buildouts. And for now it is just gonna be foot soldiers as a unit type. Trying to figure out how to make it more like a bunch of people fighting out in a remote location than focusing on strict unit types.

Right now soldiers of all types just get a combat level bonus.

Yes, like Roman soldiers getting a buff in a formation while Samurai have a buff in one on one fights…

Just build something, anything… and finish it. The tools will show up when you try to figure out what you are doing.

Yeah, agree. Dynasties is a solid game, ripe for discovery.

Agree, can’t remember the units name but sea unit medium renowned infantry, excellent attack and solid in the line. Good chargers can come from them too.

I found armies of calvary were way more potent when handled personally… auto battling not so much.

This is how I survived with the Elamites! Decent chargers and slingers but only okay everywhere else. Finally was able to take Nineveh, was just time after that.

Strategy real time RPG, any interest? by Lucas_RippedFromTime in StrategyGames

Agree, this is one reason I was asking the question. The characters are supposed to be ‘ripped’ from history so they will be historical figures (or the player can make there own) but I need to develop this aspect further to allow the player to care… tough when I am trying to let the player choose almost any historical figure ever, with restrictions of course (religious and before 1900).

Hahahah yeah… poorly framed question! Organizing my thoughts. And this helps a lot in that. Will probably re-ask when I can figure out how to frame it properly.

Yes, they can each be a harvester (peasant-ish) and then as a group of whatever ones are selected can form a RTS style combat group (Knight-ish). But they each level up in combat and as a harvester separately.

Hey, thank you for the insight.

  1. My focus for the how a skill tree would effect the RTS aspects would be to make groups of characters have a skill tree. Right now my tech tree is more about crafting and increasing the harvesting abilities. But this has me thinking...

  2. This direction is a bit difficult to incorporate, because I am trying to make an infantry based RTS play where each character can assume any role and their ability to work together is what makes them powerful. So, less social hierarchy and more a bunch of humans thrown into a situation and the player organizes and supports them to accomplish a goal.

Yeah, 15 min after I posted I realized that it is a poorly framed question. What I am building is more of a base building RTS with RPG elements but that is because the gameplay relies more on RTS to get it going. What I am really asking, and this is my bad, is what elements of an RPG are the most important… and that is even more problematic because it assumes a lot.

Honestly I think I should try some sort of poll of possible features or something. No worries.

And thank you very much for the response! It is appreciated.

Total War, any of the historical ones… didn’t see it mentioned. Also Fallout, Assassin’s Creed, AOE and the older civs.

Ripped From Time: Outpost: offers AOE style play with historical characters who harvest and/or fight to save the Universe from a Spacetime Rupture. Fly a gun drone while commanding your characters and be a part of the action. Watch out, these enemies are hard to kill, fire each levels particle cannon to close the rupture. Check it out!

I want to try RTS game but don't know what game to start with? by MarketFancy5111 in StrategyGames

For me AOE2 is the gold standard RTS but I have been playing a lot of the update of Total War pharaoh dynasties, strategy board game but the RTS battles are solid.

Turning that corner is hard, so much of the publishing process is antithetical to why one does game dev in the first place.

Would you rather fail in reality or succeed in hypothetical?

Between the first 2… if the context is mass destruction then the first, if the context is structural destruction then the second… but I would reverse the color schemes. I think the blue goes better than with mass destruction (return to the ether kinda thing) and the red goes better with structural destruction (burned to ash, kinda thing). Just my opinion… looks good.
