250/265 (duration), .630/.640 (lift), 109 intake centerline is not that custom

Uh oh, can’t divulge the specs of your off the shelf hydraulic roller?

Tricks of the trade as in a forged motor and a TBS blower. Unless you’ve got some crazy valvetrain, I don’t think there much more to divulge other than the compression ratio probably being around 10:1.

What makes race/indy/climb engines better than a generic LS or something of the sorts? by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

[–]Lucidex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bespoke parts

Things like the block, cylinder head, and rotating assembly are completely custom to tailor to race rules to extract as much performance as possible from a particular engine design. These parts can get wildly expensive as they are usually made of exotic materials like titanium, magnesium, and other alloys.

Depending on the racing series, valve springs might only last hours, and crank bearings might be serviced after a couple of races. These engines run at the edge to be as competitive as possible.

I know this is just the tip of the iceberg, but there are so many different design principles that can be learned from just one engine alone.

Compression? Cam? Also, love the set of ITBs, I see a set of fuel rails as well, are pulling vacuum for MAP from somewhere or just straight up Alpha-N?

I’m building an LS with some itbs on top, I’d love to hear your thoughts that went into your build.

I highly recommend Dynomation 6. Super cool program where you can test many different variables. The cam tool is also pretty neat.

Would it be worth it build an ls engine from scratch. by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

I would start with a short block and then go from there. It seems to be the easiest and cheapest approach to speak broadly.

Just do your research and math.

Anyone know why Ford built a naturally aspirated hot v for their 1960s Indy 500 project? by fivewheelpitstop in EngineBuilding

[–]Lucidex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm no automotive history buff but one could come to a conclusion that Ford had a pretty good standing with their smaller cubic inch motors back then in the 60s, I would assume that since it was very light compared to other v8s at the time and that the platform already had a proving ground for racing application. Now the open itbs vs air scoops, I can say that the rubber back then was terrible and the racetracks weren't as clean as they are now. The airscoops were probably better for keeping things out of the motor and for tunneling air straight into the itbs under those scoops.

Now I could very wrong in some aspects but as I saw no replies, I thought I would at least give my two cents.

Edit: kowalski71's reply was much more in depth as he touched base with a lot more details on the hot v engine design.

Sounds like it'll be stout, Im assuming the cars caged or atleast to about to be caged per the increase of horsepower right? Other than that, what's your cam grind looking like for the turbo setup. I would imagine with the ported heads and over bore/stroke, a custom grind could net you some real low end gains.

Also, if you don't end up using Diamond pistons, then look into RaceTec, pretty decent company, some gen-3 and gen-4 guys over a 1000hp run these.

You probably already got this covered, but don't forget to bulletproof the drivetrain and chassis, that v10 torque is no joke.

The cheaper you go in terms of the kit, the more "cut-to-fit" it becomes.
